Word

Itís not a place you can write.
You just go there. And ask
in all humility
that the word
the fragile crutch
might be removed.

The word brings you to the door
and leaves you. Or you leave it
purpose served
in its unconvinced pain
to wail in outer darkness
to spell out how very much
you need it.

Not that you reject it
from anger or bitter blindness
only the simple light
telling you: no further.
The doorís hanging frame
and the severe beauty beyond
allow no word.
Word cannot take you there, nor you take it.

So you trace a timid path to the door
and pray for removal
dreaming of ending
beginning
to take the first wincing step without support
into the blessed annihilating
wordless silence.

But you are still there
scratching at the door
draped over the word like a broken hand
without access to what lies beyond
the pure chiseled feeling of the threshold.

isn't she?

those last two stanzas are fantastic

dreaming of ending
beginning
to take the first wincing step without support
into the blessed annihilating
wordless silence.

My brother read this poem and commented that it sounded like the kind of thing Bono would recite at the start of Streets in concert--I thought that was a delightful thing to say
