THE MATHEMATICAL KISS

winking diamonds on the wallpaper web
entranced in mid-dance we dip and freeze;
it's a careful studied still life,
this "will she ever be my wife?"

swoons under spell of harmonium song
the loosened ties of land legs
brought onto the deck for an ebbing
flowing midnight mistletoeing
a Mercury glow on the walls
patterns formed and recognized

ovulate your bright ideas and right angles
calculate the mathematical kiss
the vectors of eyelines
the arc of the lips
the points of the fingers
the pull of the hips

strip your stamens
pack your pistils
this is the hour for every flower
without a match and mate
watch the blackboard for a how-to
of how do you do;
its four simple steps--
follow the arrows and black shoes

back to the punch,
spiked like a falsified time clock;
partner change
part of your formula
food for your proof;
does it all even out in the ends of rows
turned in toes
chafed insoles
and charmed betrothed?
whether you're comely or homely,
come home.
