More Barbed Wire

They said here it would be better,
but it?s like the moon ?
only hotter -
only colder.

They said here that
Australians were friendly and kind hearted,
but I am yet to meet
their smiling faces of welcome.

They said here I would find sanctuary,
in this place of broad open plains
and cool green valleys.
But I have exchanged one prison for another ?
more fear,
more despair ?
more barbed wire ?
Grieving over past injustices,
only to face new ones.
Hideous dislocation
our only crime.

I yearn to walk free,
and look for a new life
in a new land.
But, red nightmares of
smoke and terror
still torment and suffocate.

Where is the peace?
Where is the hope?

Where is the trust?

I?m not sleeping.

Many people here may not realise , but Australia has built detention centres in remote inhospitable areas to house refugees while they wait to see if they can stay - some have have been there for over three years. Most have risked their lives to get here. I personally think it is a national shame.
All this led me to write this poem - well I suppose I borrowed the last line.
Thanks Bono!
