On the Rise

I wrote this while I was flying over the Black Mesa in northern New Mexico.

I climb onto the mesa
drag my feet across the boulder
clamber to stand and admire the view
I can see arroyos
yucca
and sage
I stand, genuflecting in the sun
and the Zia
arrests my soul

I lower into the cavern
as I descend, I fall
stumble
pounce towards a scree patch
clutch onto the skeleton of a yucca plant
stand upright
dust off my jeans
launch further in
my downward descent is a chosen path

you reach out to me as I stare off into the morning
your firm lover?s grasp holds
my thick tanned hand
we are two cowboys ? you in heels, me in boots
it?s the hair
it?s the eyes
it?s the look of the day
the big screen never knew a passion like this
we should be stars!

I let my vulnerability show
I let you see my third eye go
around the room
prodding into their souls
when my vision caught her
you scolded me with a cringed brow
so I stayed at our table
and finished my drink

neon passions
airborne dreams
millennial intentions
stuck in the air traffic of the nineties
these patterns etched into eternity
like the drawings deep in Chaco

We?re gonna be big stars
if we can get up and into the sky
I?ll reach for you
I?ll grab for you
if I get there first
because I want us to be together
together tonight
on the rise to the top of this
universal canyon
spiritual journey
eternal life
and wonderful vision
