Hungover at the airport
What happened last night?
Busted mirror and empty pockets
I guess you made your flight

Your cigarettes in the glove compartment
Your jacket by my side
Memories of the one who loved me
And our crazy ride

I knew it was too good to be true
People like me can't have
People like you

So I walk along this crooked path
I've grown accustomed to
But now I no longer have
The company of you
And though the sun does shine
There is no hand in mine

This bed is bigger than ever
I don't know where to sleep
Metallic alcohol embraces
Hold me while I weep

Your smile is framed on my bookshelf
I can't flip it down
I'll be waiting on the porch
In my wedding gown

I knew it was too good to be true
People like me can't have
People like you

So I walk along this crooked path
I've grown accustomed to
But now I no longer have
The company of you
And though the sun does shine
There is no hand in mine

I knew it was too good to be true
People like me can't have
People like you

these lines haunt me....

thank you for sharing this wonderful poem

I keep hearing this as a song...simple..direct but specific images..."I knew it was too true..." sounds like it could be a chorus. Its hard for me to write in rhyme these days.....but this isn't singsong...its musical...but not in a kindergarten way. I enjoyed reading this.
