something about inheritances and greedy relatives...

CONTRETEMPS

paste in the mouth,
faced with a horrifying
cantrap trigger,
the word wrapped in snails' tails;
prepare for rolled throats and red bandages

under the cloth cover
of the dawn's drawn shade
cards fanned out,
a raven reading of the dead man's hand;
there's a denoument
but no end is slight--
your summarily executed
last pill and pestillence

late assembled,
the restless progeny
straining for the called names,
checking their tickets
for bloodmoney stains;
the pickled advocate
cannot judge
but silently loaths
behind the emerald banker's lamp

a frame of reprehensible:
lost perspex,
sounds from the floors below
and days behind;
there are bats in the belltower
vagaries in the exchanges
'twixt the living and the laid to rest.
