I am terrified of the dentist

The dentist IS scary. I've been terrified ever since I got my first filling and that awful man came at me with the shot. No more cavities since then thank God, but I do get really edgy when I go to the dentist. When I got my braces on I broke out in a skin rash and felt like I had a fever :reject:

They knocked me out to take my wisdom teeth and BOY am I thankful

I hope it works out for you  Maybe you could try a mild muscle relaxer before you go to calm you down?

I remember last year when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. I was very worried about it, but they put me under so that was good. The hard part came after, cause of the hearing loss, I felt down right terrible. Buring up, pale, spiting up blood, nauses. It was bad. But the good thing was that I got to eat ice cream, patatoes, and apple sause. ANd the pain only lasted for about a day. Went on a hike across Delaware, a 14 mile hike, only 2 days after getting my teeth taken from my mouth.

The dentist ordinarily doesn't scare me. I don't mind getting impressions, cleanings, or x-rays. Shots don't bother me. I had braces and teeth pulled as a child, and I've had all four of my widsom teeth removed. I've had three root canals (two on the same tooth, because the first one failed.) It cracks me up when people tell me I have nice teeth, just because so much freaking dental work went into them.

But I do feel your pain -- literally. When I was 18, I went in to get a cavity filled. They gave me the shots like they always did, waited for them to "take," and then started drilling. Guess what? I wasn't numb, and the drill hit a nerve. OUCH. Turns out I have some weird sort of nerve structure in my mouth, so the standard numbing procedure didn't work on me. And get this: the dentist snapped at me to not jump in the chair, and started drilling into me again! Me: "AIIIEEEEEEEEE!" Dentist: "Don't jump!" *whiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*

When he finally figured out that I wasn't numb, they gave me another shot and tried again to no avail. They gave up and sent me to a specialist to get it done, and I found a new dentist.

Now I'm terrified whenever they give me shots and start drilling, because I'm just waiting for that god-awful pain to hit me again. It happened again last year. Thankfully, my new dentist was very understanding. It took two more tries to get me numb. Ugh.

I say go for the sedation dentistry. It'll save you a lot of grief and money as well.

I do use sedation dentistry. The problem with impressions, though, is that they can't sedate you fully because then there is a very real threat of choking and not realizing it. So, they wanted to try valium and this is what happened.

Apparently, valium and I do not mix and I totally freaked out. I even scratched the crap at of my own arm and became paranoid that my dentist was trying to kill me. Clearly, valium is out.

I am going back tonight. I am determined to get this done, but on my own terms. They are going to use a topical ointment to numb the roof of my mouth, put the tray in, and leave the room. My mom is going to be allowed to hold the tray in place. I will also be allowed to stand up and walk around, if that is what I feel I need to do. If this doesn't work, I don't know what else to do.

I just feel like such a loser over this. It seems like such a simple thing, uncomfortable, but simple. I suppose it doesn't help that I keep beating myself up over it.

You are not a loser at all! Everyone deals with things in their own way. What may be no problem for one is a huge deal for someone else! Hopefully this method tonight will be the one that works out for you. Good luck you have my support

Don't feel like a loser! I remember being told when I was 18 that I should look into having something done about my wisdom teeth...and I didn't get them out until I was 24 because I was scared. :reject:

luckily, my dentist is extremely hot.

and actually thats the only way to cure fear of the dentist.

i've never been so happy about seeing the dentist as i am now.

Well, I did it. Which would have been nice, except there was a bubble in the impression and it couldn't be used. I didn't manage to make it through a second one. Another appointment to dread next week. :sigh:

Awwwww Im sorry :( You did overcome a huge hurdle though with getting it done the 1st time. Good luck with your next appt you can do this!

I'm sorry you are having such a rough time Em . I hate the dentist too. I was so afraid to have a root canal that I went about 2 years with a giant hole in my tooth and eventually ended up with an infection and no longer had dental insurance.

I need some dental work but have no insurance. Does anyone have some sort of idea how much fillings cost?

This is what I found.

"Although costs vary across the country and by dental office, the cost of typical metal filling ranges from approximately $75 to $145 per filling, whereas a composite resin fillings range from $150 to $200 for a single surface white composite filling."

:yikes:

My old dentist had a starting price of about $80 for a metal filling. The deeper that she would have to go to fill it the more she would charge. This was on top of doing x-rays to determine what she was dealing with.

Depends on how bad the cavity is and what kind of filling you want. If they quote you a price for the filling, make sure you get quoted the FULL price (including any x-rays, the pain shots, and any other materials required during the process but not considered the "filling").

I only just got dental insurance in Nov from changes in my job status. Previously, I was looking into purchasing my own plan. I found some plans that were like $50 a month and covered most of regular cleanings and like 50% of fillings. I would have gone this route, since at the time I still needed a cleaning and two cavities filled.
