The Interference Thread Survivor - Preliminary Nostalgia

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
OK, by my count, the following threads are must-haves in the final bracket (generally by receiving multiple mentions in this thread):

Morrissey - a live nod to U2 at Glastonbury?
tuf bono respect

That's 14 right there. The challenge of making a bracket is filling it up to either 16 or 32 or 64 or some usable bracket-type number. I'm adding threads starting now, so if you're insistent on a thread getting in there, speak up. I know we're missing Pop Survivor Round 1 because I couldn't find the link, nor the OG Shuttlecock thread, which I'm not sure we decided on anyway.

If you want to push for 32 threads, I can be more liberal with what I add. If we're only doing 16, I have to start thinking about what I'm going to cut.

El Mel, how could you NOT include Shuttlecock, or the Beatles remasters? Those each have multiple installments that destroy almost everything else on Interference.

I'm going to keep coming in to bat for I'm Disappointed In Everything U2's Ever Done until it's there.

Even A_Wanderer fell for The Edge.

Someone who was around at the time, how did you all fall for it? What was the back story that made it seem true?

I guess it was the excitement of the new CD that added to the gullibility. And the fact U2 is very much aware of this forum. But yeah, I fell for it. Sigh!

ETA: I just checked out the first page of that thread. Oh God, were we a foolish bunch!

How do we know they're "very much aware"?

Also I'm trying to find where Ol' Whiskey started but having some trouble.

Well, we're a large forum that's been around for many years. And I think one of the mods once said that the band and those who work for them lurk from time to time.

Correct me if I'm wrong! :silent:

As far as I recall (and it might not be totally correct), there was at least some indication or implication from mods that it was legitimate. After the fact, I think Sicy or someone posted that they had done some diligence on it and felt it to be verifiable.

So, that was after the fact of course, which begs the question how did rational people actually believe it before all that came out..well..I know for me I was relatively confident that the mods would never knowingly allow an imposter to play that cruel of a game on the board, and the very fact that it was allowed to continue seemed to indicate to me that they must have done some sort of check and believed it to be true. I had alot of faith that the people who run the forum would be all over that kind of thing, being huge U2 fans themselves. Is/was there also a rule about not being allowed to call yourself "Bono", "The Edge", "Adam Clayton", or "Larry Mullen Jr"? I think there was/is. In other words, for a person to have even been allowed to set up the account and start posting as "The Edge"..it had to be real. That was just my belief on it, can't speak for others.

The lichtenbergstein thing looks pretty stupid, and incredibly unbelievable from the perspective of not being there at the time. The fake edge debacle does too, but it had the backing of the mods. sicy was a rather tyrannical mod of all mods at the time (btw, is she even still here?) who ran around telling people to move their conversations to AIM because this place discourages chat threads (oh how things have changed now), and she handed some "official" word down from Elvis saying this is the real edge and you should all be ashamed for doubting it. It was almost a little old testament in its "the word of the mods have been handed down and you will believe them or burn in flames!" sicy as Moses nonsense. I almost believed it for a day or two.

Weird how some stuff catches people at different moments of gullibility or whatever: I knew from post 1 of the Kuntsmuseum that it was a big joke, probably because of who started it. Or, at least that's what I tell myself

...Uhh...Is it just me or is that Loris startlingly accurate?

ETA: And now I'm certain he's just talking out of his ass.

YES! I was going to post this last night, but was too lazy to go look for it. Yes, a million times over.

Even A_Wanderer fell for The Edge.

What Gabe said (though I wasn't here at the time, I read pretty much every post relating to the event, there were several threads).

YES again!

And for someone who really wasn't on the Shuttlecock train, I definitely agree that the first thread was fucking hilarious.

I said that I didn't include Shuttlecock's original thread because I was in a hurry and couldn't find it at that moment. Of course this puppy is a classic and will be included:

I'll have to revisit the Beatles Remaster threads, as I don't remember a lot about them offhand.

That Morrissey thread is really awesome until it descends into an argument, which I participated in at the time.

Still astounding to me that the bloke would not just admit that he didn't know Satellite of Love was a Lou Reed song and not a U2 original.

I still laugh when I think of the one song that had the Rowena's Theme snippet. That some people still believed the show was real after that is about the most extreme gullability I have ever seen here.

I thought kunstmuseum started off funny and then turned mean-spirited because it just became fodder for mocking the gullible ones.
