Hurricaine Sandy

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

MTA's twitter account is confirming that the east river subway crossings are flooded... apparently power on the west side is starting to flicker... whole blocks in Rockaway have gone up in flames because the flooding is too bad for the FDNY to put it out... and somewhere out there, somebody at UCF was denied a campaign stump speech.

On that, I'm going to bed.

Don't you worry though, Barack has the ability to put those fires out with the snap of his fingers right as they start!

Get over yourself.

Stay safe, you crazy kids.
what?!
I can't take my surf board out? :(

So the rain is still going on and off, wind gusts aren't happening as often (though there are still strong ones into tomorrow) but the tides are going to increase overnight in the coastal areas.

Remind me to never get a house by the water!

Bad update: Backup generator died at NYU Hospital, its being evacuated.

Let's hope he got out of New York in time to make it to Florence.

How long do you all think the subway down for? Days? Weeks?

I think the subway is always down, Cobbler. You're thinking of streetcars

My basement in Toronto has an inch of water in it right now. Lovely.

Better yet we are house hunting and supposed to see a house that backs onto a river tomorrow.

Apparently, things are very bad on Staten Island. There are reports of water up to attics and rescues by boat. There is also a report of a fire on Coney Island.

Yeah, staten island and manhattan, long island all surrounded by water, the rising tides and storm surge coming in from all sides. They may have to discuss how to prevent this in the future. Levees? Need to prepare for the possibility a cat 2 or cat 3 could hit in the future. Not out of the realm of possibility.

The bulk of the storm seems to be pushing into Pennsylvania. Stay safe anyone over there! Trees will be coming down.

Does anyone think they might discuss the idea of building levees in New York?

Police commissioner needs to shoot that signal into the sky and bring in the heroes.

Winds are picking up here and have consistently been around 40 MPH for a while. Just walked some blocks downtown to grab food and saw some street and store signs that have been partially or wholly blown off. Other than that, nothing severe.

:( Penn

actually we've (as in people paying attention either to print, on-line or radio maybe PBS) ... I've seen various computer generated images of ideas from various combinations of architects, environmentals to handle Climate Change here in NYC in turns of variouis types of structures in the harbor etc to prevent a semi or full-on disaster, some discussion on radio etc re mostly so far the very section here of Lower Manhattan that just got swamped for a few years already.

Now that I saw on TV :yikes: alll those poor people having to go down all those stairs!
got a friend who works there but hopefully they left by 5P before this happened ...only they're going back to their without-power apt.

HAIS not sure i knew you were now in nyc, only a passing ref you made last yr when B&E were speaking at the Y and you were talking about using the gym so you could get in :D

I thought tyou were still in LI -wondered how near the shore youn were!

Here in Chicagoland, we're having sympathy pains for you guys. Winds have been gusting to 40 all night, sounds like the screen door is about to go flying off. Two story waves are expected on Lake Michigan's coastline. Seems like my parents in MD will be southwest of the bulk of the storm, so that's good.

I wonder if sales of print porn skyrocked this week.

I heard the pier in my hometown was completely engulfed by waves. That usually only happens in the winter. (referring to Indiana)

I'm in Texas right now. I was attending my grandmother's funeral. Ironically enough, she went by the name Sandy.
