Hurricane Irene is now on a path that could take it dangerously close to, if not over, the mid-Atlantic coastline and New York City on Sunday, posing a serious danger to millions of people.
The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center is confident that Irene will strike the Outer Banks of North Carolina Saturday evening as a strong Category 3 or Category 4 hurricane.
Beyond that point, latest indications put Irene on a path extremely close to or over the mid-Atlantic coast and New York City before plowing into western New England. This could mean the worst effects from a hurricane in the region in 50 years.
Irene is expected to track near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and Delmarva coast Saturday night, then could pass within 30 miles of New York City Sunday evening as a weakening Category 2 hurricane.

Stay safe everybody!

Oh jeez, Mayor Bloomberg is thinking about evacuating some areas of NYC. He probably is just saying all this to make up for that preparation fiasco during the blizzards last winter.

reports have it that 3 hurricanes are headed south from the North Pole as well.

btw, Sam is in New York City.

Ugh, the worst is when they have the fucking reporter standing on the beach as the storm comes ashore yelling into the camera about how bad it is

I was in Biloxi, MS, for Hurricane Katrina. The Weather Channel guy was out on the beach overlooking the casinos and said, "Take a good look, because this may all be gone tomorrow."

At the time I thought, "What a bunch of hyperbole." Unfortunately he turned out to be right. The casino he was in front of ended up on the other side of the highway, on top of a Holiday Inn.

Latest track is bringing it more inland. Not good.

Have we reached maximum desalinization already??????

If that means Jake Gyllenhaal will be wandering around New York City wet and topless, I'm in. But yeah, that's like the most unbelievable natural disaster movie since Volcano. (*note, the actual mechanism for the climate change is actually correct, it's just not that fast at all and the results were laughable.)

Great, I'm in a zone that may get evacuated. My parents are shrugging off Bloomberg's warnings, but I don't know.

But I am going food shopping tonight. Usually I go on Sundays, but I'm not going that day - hell no! And its going to be mobbed with hysterical people stocking up on food.

To quote the Talking Heads, This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin' around. Irene is now as big as any observed tropical cyclone ever observed in the Atlantic, with tropical storm-force winds extending 290 miles in each direction from the center.

From the NY Post: Before Hurricane Irene hits, New York planning to shut down transportation system, evacuate areas

Yes, that is the ENTIRE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM of New York City. The point is, if you're getting supplies, get them NOW. If you're going to get out of town, don't wait around. Quite frankly, I'm surprised that Bloomberg hasn't ordered a mandatory evacuation of low-lying areas.

And in case you need any more convincing, run an image search of "bolivar peninsula hurricane ike."

Please stay safe, everyone. Hurricane Irene passed through here almost a week ago, and by pure luck, the eye of the storm did not go through the west side of the island (where I reside). Extremely rare to see a hurricane heading towards a place like New York City.

Good luck to those in the path of this storm. As a Floridian, I've been through my share. They are not fun. Be prepared...

Wow, that sure sounds terrible

It seems surreal that NY might actually get hit.

Everyone that is affected by this hurricane: Please take care, stay safe. Our thoughts are with you.

on a serious, non Dennis Quaid note, i really do hope everyone is overreacting and that these are just safety precautions.

This is not an over reaction. Image search Hurricane Ike Bolivar Peninsula. That kind of storm surge is coming to Gotham.

I checked the images and despite being amazed by what I saw, I don't think NYC is going to be leveled this weeekend. I do expect a lot of flooding since about a foot of rain is expected. That will be hell to deal with.

I'm concerned that it may be worse than predicted.

The evacuations have begun in the low-lying areas, Zone A, and its mandatory by Mayor Bloomberg. I live near a Zone A area so I'm wondering if I'll have to start packing once I get home from work.

On a lighter note, bring on the Kanye West jokes:

"Yo Irene imma let u finish but Katrina was the best hurricane ever!"

(found that on Twitter)
