My brother and I have written a children's book (he wrote the story and I illustrated it), and he has been submitting it to publishers over the internet. We didn't know what to expect, but two publishers so far have accepted it. One already sent my brother a contract. Neither of us have ever dealt with anything like this before, and we would really like to avoid being taken advantage of. If anyone here has experience with book publishing, any advice would be greatly appreciated! :help:

- The contract my brother received talked about fees that we will have to pay, but not until we start making a profit. The total would be about $3,400 for this particular company. Is that a ripoff? What is reasonable amount? Should we even be paying any fees?

- Do we need a lawyer? Do we need an agent?

- Are there any important questions we should be asking these companies?

- What red flags should we watch out for?

I will come back and add more questions as I think of them. Thanks in advance!
