Would you still do Schutzhund with Nikon if you get a puppy?

Most definitely, though he may be titled by that time and at this point, I do not intend to compete nationally with him. I would like to do Dog Sport once his SchH titles are done. If he was better for the show ring, then I would definitely go to nationals and try for Universal Sieger, but he has an overbite. At this point I can't tell if it will keep him from a V-rating but I will definitely not be able to Koer him short of some miracle.

I take it you can't fix an overbite?

You can surgically and some people do for a really bad one that is painful for the dog. But fixing one like his for pure cosmetics and then showing the dog is akin to breaking tails to fix a tail set, dying the hair for better pigment, etc. His bite is purely genetic. It does not effect his training or work or anything other than it not being perfect conformation.

Surgery!! Ouch!! I was thinking more like Ike and his braces. How's Kenya doing?

That probably could have worked when he was younger. The bite was off as a puppy, but that is not uncommon. Then the teeth fell out and it wasn't so bad, but you never know while they are still teething and growing. I presented him to a Koermeister for a dentition exam when he was 13 months and the Koermeister told me to wait until 16 months and see b/c he had a nice young male that outgrew his overbite. Since then there has really been no change for better or worse. There are other things about him that will keep him from being a high V though, so as long as the bite is correct enough to do Schutzhund and otherwise be a normal dog, to me it's not worth fixing. The problem with training and showing males is that you can breed females to the best dogs in the world for cheap or even free. So-so studs are a dime a dozen. If you do not own a superb young male or VA male then you are sinking money every day. Now I don't see it that way since my dog is first and foremost my pet and companion who protects me at home and when I'm out alone but as a breeding prospect, it's generally not a good investment to own males. I just prefer males though, not sure why.

Kenya's doing good as far as I know, she is still with my sister. No news is good news. Since I got back and she didn't come home, several people have told me that Nikon acts differently without her around. He is far more calm, independent, and self-controlled. Her neurosis kind of puts everyone on edge. A lot of things I'd attributed to Nikon's age were apparently because of the overall "vibe" at home.

My brother thought he was so smart for getting yellow-y/beige carpet because he has 2 yellow labs and thought the hair and pee stains wouldn't show.
They proved him wrong with barf!

Dogs > carpet
