So I just inherited a cat from my ailing grandmother. I've never had a cat before, so I'm in need of some advice on what brand of cat food would be best for her. She's about six years old and appears to be a bit on the heavy side - perhaps fifteen pounds or so? I'd like to have her diet slightly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would feed wet food only or mostly wet food. From my experience my cat has lost weight on a wet food only diet. Dry food has tons of carbs.

When you do switch foods, make sure to do it gradually though. A sudden change in food can upset cause an upset stomach.

Wesley is 12.5 pounds and I think he's a big chunk. He's a big guy so my vet said his natural weight should be somewhere in the 12-13 pound range but he just looks like a big fatty to me lately. I can't imagine 15 pounds!

Boomer is a big bodied cat and he has weighed as much as 17 lbs at one time. I think last visit he was 16lbs. Year before that he was 15.5 and he looked almost lean, he seems to have put some of it back on. Oreo is typically 1 LB less than Boomer.

17 pounds?!?! He must be way bigger than Wesley then. My vet told me Wesley is freakishly tall so I always think of him as a really big guy but after hearing that your cat weighs so much more than him, maybe he's not as big as we (the vet and I) think!

Yeah, I really don't know what I'm talking about here. My cat looks overweight to me, but she could just be a huge ball of fur for all I know.

Anyway, I went with some salmon formula food that looks like a quality product. She must like it, because she is now refusing to eat any of her old food.

You should also consult the cat's Vet about this.

Her Vet , who should be familiar with her history, would be the best person to advice you on dietary changes and whether any diet is even necessary.
