We are having stuffed peppers and corn on the cob tonight. I'm not taking pictures because my family will think I'm weird. Oh yeah, and there's pie.

Speaking of which, I was thinking that I should post this pie recipe because it's both easy and delicious!

Chocolate Satin Pie

1 pre-made graham cracker pie crust
2 egg yolks
1 12 oz. package semisweet chocolate chips
1 can evaporated milk (normal size; I don't remember how many ounces it was :reject: )

Heat milk and egg yolks on medium-low heat in a saucepan, stirring continually until slightly thickened and very warm (it should be steamy). Do not boil. Remove from heat and add chocolate chips. Stir until smooth and chocolate is melted. Pour into pie crust and refrigerate until solid (about 3 hours). Serve with whipped cream, if desired (you know you want to).

^ Omg, I must try that. I suddenly have a mad craving for chocolate. ;)

I made Chicken Paprikash with halushki last night. A traditional Hungarian/Slovak dish my grandmother has always made for us. I may post the recipe once I perfect it a bit. It didn't quite turn out like hers, although delish, so I have to play with it a bit.

ooh! would love to see the recipe!

i make "chicken paprika", i wonder if it's similar? i sautee the chicken breasts til golden, then add chopped onion and garlic and soften, then chuck in a whole load of paprika, a touch of Cayenne pepper, chopped canned tomatoes, scorched and peeled red pepper quarters, then place in a casserole dish and bake in the oven... before serving add creme fraiche and freshly squeezed lemon and serve with rice...

i do love making Hungarian goulash too... these are always family favourites/winter staples...

Hungarian food is underrated. Most tender meat I've ever eaten. Meltworthy.
This. I grew up on the stuff. Not the prettiest presentation, but oh my, is it delicious.

That sounds pretty similar. I'll post the recipe once I'm done playing with it. It was delish, but could use a bit of tweaking.

I love Jimmy Johns.

But when it comes to sandwiches and subs, I like 'em simple. If the bread is good, I'm pretty easy to please.

Why don't you like them?

Hard bread, stuffed with alfalfa sprouts, meat and cheese unevenly spread (so some bites are too much, others just bread), very little dressing. A general attitude of money first, quality second that I feel whenever I go there. Those sandwiches are not worth the price they're charging.

But, you guys probably know by now I'm a little obsessive about my sandwich places.

My favorites:
Quiznos (but only when I'm making the food )
Which Wich - God I miss this place so much.
Potbelly - same here, but at least there are a few around, though not near me.
Jasons Deli - another Texas joint I miss
Panera
And there's one more in Texas I can't recall the name of and am too lazy to look up.

I love all of those places times a billion. Subways in there somewhere too, but I'm not sure where I'd rate it.

Left out local shops, because comparing them to a chain isn't fair to the chain.

EDIT: just remembered the name: schlotzsky's deli.

My first experience with Potbelly was when I got off a plane at Midway Airport in Chicago. We were looking for lunch, and there was Potbelly Sandwiches with a line of like 40 people, most of which were pilots and flight attendants. Well, if you travel enough, you know that the flight crews know where the good food is, so we got in line immediately. Delicious!
Thankfully, Potbelly came to Minneapolis a few years ago.

Anyway, speaking of Chicago airports and sandwiches...another favorite is grabbing a sandwich from The Berghoff in O'Hare.:drool::drool:
I'm glad I connect through there often. Hand-carved, fresh, warm sandwiches. They have decent beer, too.

Oh man, I used to loooove Schlotzky's! Panera is great, too. I don't have the bean sprout problem with Jimmy John's because I always leave them off.

I like basic sandwiches - meat, cheese, mayo, mustard, MAYBE tomatoes, but that's the only veggie I can tolerate on them.

Tomatoes/olives aside, I feel like if an ingredient is supposed to be on a sandwich, I should leave it on there. But they just overdo it with those sprouts.

I feel like I'm being judged whenever the sandwich maker behind the counter looks at me and asks ".... you just want meat and cheese?"

DON'T JUDGE ME. I eat vegetables*. Just not on sandwiches!

Haha I'm guilty of being a behind the counter "judger".

"Really? You just want turkey and tomatoes? This sandwich is seven fucking dollars. What's wrong with you?"

I like sprouts, but they scare me because of their seemingly disproportionate propensity to have E.coli.

Huh...I didn't know that. Thankfully I only see them at JJs and I've only eaten there about five times.

i'm not a big fan of panera. speaking of 7 dollar sandwiches with not a lot of stuff, i like a lot of stuff on my sandwich and expect a bit more than some chicken, peppers, and bacon (no, everything is NOT better with bacon) on some fancy bread. not worth it.

Panera is not my favorite place either, but they have a turkey artichoke sandwich that I'd very possibly kill over.

Haha, true enough.

It was more the people who got JUST MEAT that killed me. Especially when that meat was turkey.

I really like McAlister's Deli. I had never heard of it until I was in college. They have really good sandwiches, but they also have baked potatoes and soup that isn't too bad, either. They're also known for their sweet tea.

Now I want a sandwich. :grumpy:

I'm not a huge fan of Panera either. I think the sandwiches aren't that great for the price. The salads are ok but it's just not my favorite place to go. My mom likes it there so if we're out running errands together that's usually the fast food place of her choice so I tolerate it, especially since she pays :flirt: But I really just like sub places where I can pick what I want. Plus a lot of places like Subway is big enough for two lunches. Can't beat that for $5.00. I'm always hungry when I leave Panera :der:

And as a vegetarian I eat just about any kind of vegetable there is but do NOT put sprouts on my food :barf: Sprouts and red onions are evil....

schlotzsky's deli
blech. they used to be in 'fiz and i hated them. i didn't like their bread.

here i only have subway (not even any nz-specific chains), thank god i actually like them. it's funny, i hadn't been to subway in ages until i came here, now i wanna go all the time.

 ian has the same issue. i used to as well before i liked veggies. at subway, the lettuce seems to be the big thing. they're asking you what you want on it, with a huge bit of lettuce already in their hand. it seems to throw them off when you say "nothing, thanks" so i just get the lettuce (not a huge raw veggie fan unless it's something leafy) to shut them up. plus it's a filler, so my subs don't look all tiny and sad. they need roasted red peppers or something, if veggies are cooked i can eat just about anything.

and ooh yes, i saw mcalister's mentioned. they're great. i usually get their club sandwich which is yummy. and oh yes, the tea. i'm an unsweet drinker but it's great.

oh oh and panera has cream of broccoli soup? not that gross broccoli cheese soup? i used to be able to get cream of broccoli everywhere when i was a kid, then everyone realised people love cheese and everyone switched to that. blech, i must be the only person who hates broccoli and cheese together.

I used to be like that as a kid, but now lettuce, peppers, and onions are a assumed for me. But noting more. Maybe tomatoes? I don't really like em but I eat em anyways.
