we had strawberries dipped in chocolate ganache last night! i had some ganache left in the fridge that needed using up and we were having strawberries for pudding, so i heated the ganache up and sort of drowned the strawberries in it - heavenly!

That's not evil, that's just what the doctor ordered. I always tell my girlfriends chocolate is one of the food groups, no need to feel guilty.

Speaking of chocolate being necessary self-care, if you ever see these, pick one up. Pure heaven with a cup of tea.

I'm glad I connect through there often. Hand-carved, fresh, warm sandwiches. They have decent beer, too.
The Berghoff is by Gate C26 in O'Hare Airport.

^Last night
Turkey Reuben with tomatoes and lettuce--be sure to grab some packets of mustard and mayo. SO much better than normal boring airport food.

Last night I tried Magnum ice cream bars-the ones that Rachel Bilson advertises. They just came to the US and they are INCREDIBLE I got the classic, they didn't have the double chocolate Belgian chocolate..

I wish I could eat one of those every day without gaining any weight and it wouldn't be bad for my health.

Fuck you guys*, now I feel like ice cream even though it's 9:30pm on what is ostensibly a winter's night.

my boss was in LA over the weekend and brought us some cupcakes to try from Sprinkles and Crumbs bakeries. Sorry but if that's all you have to go to in LA then I feel bad for you. Both were horrible. Sprinkles markets themselves as "the original cupcake bakery" but all of their cupcakes taste like they are from a box cake mix and their buttercream has a filmy aftertaste which generally means they use shortening not butter. The cake shop I work for uses all fresh ingredients and everything is made from scratch daily including real buttercream with BUTTER. The cakes from Sprinkles tasted like a box with artificial flavoring. I didn't even try the ones from Crumbs because they looked so awful I didn't want to taste them. The mass produced grocery store cupcakes look nicer than they did. But my coworkers tried them and they said it wasn't worth the calories. Not only do I work with pastries for a living but I also enjoy going to local bakeries (in MN and when I lived in Phoenix) to see what the competition has to offer so I think I'm a good judge at quality product. Neither place impressed me in the slightest.

I am SO GLAD I have cut out shortening/Crisco/hydrogenated oils .
I now get a stomach ache when I eat something with them in it, which generally means avoiding most baked goods including from nice stores (looking at YOU Kowalski's).

I like the cakes from our local grocery store better than most the fancy cupcake shops that are around. But we have the most amazing bakery here in San Diego that we got our wedding cake from 24 years ago, and go back to for a small version of it every year since then. They specialize in a cake they call their Swiss Black Forest and it is to die for. It's different than what I always associated with black forest before (no cherries). I must have a pic somewhere, I'll look.

god i hate when bakeries do that. it's called buttercream, not shorteningcream. plus shortening has zero flavour, it's gross. there's a time and a place for it but not as a main ingredient.

for that crap i might as well make them myself from a box. as i'm sure i've said before i can't make a cake for the life of me (even though everyone irl tends to forget they always suck) so i have to roll with a box, but sometimes i will make my own buttercream. it's sooooo yummy.

I think they use it in some things still.

I'd weigh 600 pounds if I lived closer to a Whole Foods. Their baked stuff and deli are

I really should check out the co-ops, too.
