Closure of @U2 forum

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Always your goto right Nick; if someone disagrees with me they don’t understand. It’s almost as old as reminding everyone of your AB remaster days.

Didn’t say I hurt you, it could have been me or Headache, remember? Reading comprehension ftw.
Dude, you're being a bit of a fanny

Should probably clarify that I use middle America in the cultural/political respect ie the simple (some may say lazy) depiction of family value oriented side of America with safe, conservative tastes. I'm not casting a net over vast swathes of your country and insulting the places you call home. By no means (although try explaining that to the moronic mods on @U2)

No offence intended.

When I responded to you, I used a ;) --a wink and a nod. I was not offended, and I'd hate for you to think that we Americans are that easily offended:)

Nick and BVS, can it. No one wants to read you two going at each other. BVS, please work on resisting the urge to take someone’s comment and make it entirely personal.

Dude, you're being a bit of a fanny

A little bit late to the convo. "Fanny" is the most G-Rated word for ass in The States. Does it mean the C-Word? Regardless, I've always thought the word was hilarious.

Ok, does anyone remember the scat porn incident at the @U2 forum some 16 or 17 years ago?

Yeah i know. In NZ fanny is slang for vagina. As is the OTHER WORD (although fanny is not a cuss word).
So I'm thinking, to continue my bent for cussing but to also respect that THE OTHER WORD is genuinely offensive to many, fanny is the best thing that ever happened a kiwilad.

Oh ok. For me, I generally try to avoid any reference to genitals when posting or in "real life". I never call a woman the C-Word. Good lord, that would just be death. But I have called some men the word which might even be worse.

I kind of stick to calling most people assholes. And here on Long Island, NY, USA, Earth, we sure got a lot of 'em.

I know plenty of Englishman who would be offended that you're crediting their childish vulgarity to the north of Hadrian's wall.

This topic was quite a hoot to read. I never really joined atU2 for the over the top moderation, but I did check the forum out quite some times. Shame it's gone. But who knows, might breathe some more life into Interf.

So I found the (since deleted) announcement from the mods as to why the @U2 forum was shutting down.

ATTENTION ALL FORUM MEMBERS:
The forum will be shutting down soon. This may or may not be a permanent closure, but it’s a time-out for now, so everyone can take a step back and remind ourselves why we’re here. The atu2 staffers who moderate the boards do it because we love U2, their art, and the community they’ve built up. However, it's harder and harder to find love on parts of these boards lately, and if we don't take a break, we'll lose too many moderators to keep the boards going.

Some threads on the boards have become really nasty, mainly the U2-focused parts, and the threads where some of you can’t avoid making political commentary on non-U2-hot-topic issues.

We’re also getting substantial feedback from people who would like to participate in the forums but are put off by the tendency to pile on or to make comments that are overblown. If a potential new forum member signs up to talk about U2’s new single and comes across a post comparing “You’re The Best Thing About Me” with his dog being castrated (this post actually happened), that’s likely to deter them from exploring any much further. We value our long-time members, and like that they feel comfortable here and have formed communities. Familiarity can breed contempt though, and too many posters seem to have forgotten about decorum in a shared space. This is NOT an indictment of everyone here. The majority of folks post because they love (or at least like) U2 and want to share opinions and to communicate with like-minded fans. Opinions aren’t always positive, and that’s just part of being human. As moderators, though, we have to deal with a lot of overblown negativity, abrasiveness under the guise of being “clever,” and entitlement that has driven previous members away from the boards in general.

Everyone who signs up agrees to the rules that are VERY clearly stated. First of which is “Don’t be a d**k.” If someone decides they’re not going to follow the rules, they can take responsibility for it. We are not obligated to accommodate their behavior. If the forum comes back online, then we strongly suggest that you read and abide by these rules.

Atu2 sincerely values the community here. But we need to reassess the goals of the forum and hopefully remind both the community members and the mods of why we are here. It’s at the point where the forum either takes a breather or it shuts down entirely. We don’t want the latter, and we doubt most of you do either. So, let’s spend a little while listening to the music, experiencing the art of this band that brought us here, and possibly come back refreshed.

So I found the (since deleted) announcement from the mods as to why the @U2 forum was shutting down.

Wow. They seem unaware that the internet is not Rated G. I understand having standards, but you can't expect online discussions and comments to be pristine and sparkling clean.

If Matt's reading this, hey, wasn't so bad having me there after all huh ?

ROFLMAO!!!!!!

I feel bad for people who were members of the community. I became a regular here after a previous forum (not U2-related) was shut down in 2003 or early 2004 and that was gutting, I'd loved the place. You don't want to lose somewhere you visit regularly and where you have friends.

But atu2's forum wasn't much chop. So heavily moderated that they censor their own first rule, "don't be a d**k". Who even thinks "dick" is a swear word, especially in that context? I prefer the lighter touch on Interference that encourages a more lively discussion - and some good back-and-forth at times. I found the atu2 forum too serious, too god-y, too sensitive, too toe-the-line. I mean, come on, they're shutting the place down in part because some poster disliked The Best Thing in a colourful way. That person was clearly the worst thing that ever happened a forum, and I'd like to shake their hand.

And of course members of U2 have only shown up at an atu2 party, because there hasn't been an Interference one for them to attend!

I have to agree with this. It's almost as if any dissent towards U2's recent output was met with shock and horror by its moderators. Far too tetchy, over sensitive and strict.

Not a fun place by any means, and as a result of the stringent rules, it lacked the relaxed atmosphere and far more nuanced discussion of this forum.

Atu2 came across too much like a Coldplay forum where it was traumatised by a small swear word like 'shit' to describe a song. This place has much more of a punk ethos, more adventurous and more willing to push the boundaries. I feel like the old U2 would have loved this site.

It was also quite worrying how it's site runner Matt McGee and moderators shut down debate concerning the malign presidency of Donald Trump, to even hint at a bad word against Trump was met with a ban...........

For a supposed 'hardcore fan' I was surprised at how much it went against the ethos of U2 as a band and it's pursuit of freedom of speech. Lord knows how he reacted to more risky albums like Achtung Baby and Zoo TV, I'm sure that site was more comfortable with Ronan Keating albums than Zooropa. I refuse to believe that they even 'get' this band - and it's actually quite embarrassing to think they are 'fans'.

Ended up a very pathetic site in all honesty, with moderators and the site runner overrun with massive egos. No great loss at all.

"THIS POST ACTUALLY HAPPENED!"

 My god, it sounds like they've just read the most shocking and explicit message ever conceived.

Get a grip guys, that is actually embarrassing that they were so offended by it.

Enjoyed reading this thread, but I now have to go iron my beige pants. Night, all!

Ya know, (by the way, I can't post in work folks, no fukin idea but as a reminder, I can sign in, but when I press to submit a post it always defaults back to log in), anyhow IF it is the right forum, if its the one got bambooed back in by Net slappers, back around 2000 late or early 01, I sure as fuk done my best posting constant piss off messages to protect the site as I was signed up, that did work for about 5 mins, messing the net slappers heads.

:wink::wink::wink::wink::wink:

Yea was a cool wee nookie place. shame, but saluting the old news.

:up::heart:
