I am not a judge of acting, but I think this should be known as one of Brando's epic performances. I guess not many people actually went to see this film maybe. I don't know what happened to Brando's accent by 1961 when he did Mutiny on the Bounty. That film was great, but his English accent in that film is often referred to as one of the worst attempts at an English accent in a film ever (next to Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins).
