I likey this thread . . . people here can spell words properly :yippie:

I think everyone's got it, except for 13. I think the answer to 13 is b), you leave out the definite article. At least that's how I hear it stated in the Canadian media all the time. When I say it that way myself, it just feels weird and awkward, though.

Ok, I think I'm pretty unqualified for that test ( english is not my first language and my teacher was australian LOL) but I can't sleep...

yes, quite ironic isn't it? spelt is a very uncommon spelling though in itself in canada, it's usually "spelled".

so there you go. thanks for your reply. like i said, i'll give "answers" later.

here we go.

------

1. red, blue, and green are examples of:
a) color
b) colour

2. if you want to do something for the benefit of another person, it can be considered a:
a) favor
b) favour

when you're not sure, add "u". favour, savour, neighbour, saviour, flavour, favourite, moustache, etc. american spelling has dropped the u, but elsewhere it remains.

i cringe when i see how often a word like favourite is spelled incorrectly by canadians. how hard is it, really?

-------------

3. if you score 96 out 100 on an exam, you would have received 96:
a) per cent
b) percent

not surprised that this one was found to be difficult. per chance, per cent, etc. they are two words, not one. look in the globe and mail, national post or regional paper if you don't believe me. TWO. WORDS. american spelling, however, once again dictates that it's one. canadians, however, are not american.

----------------

4. when this is used a noun, it's spellt:
a) centre
b) center

5. when this is used as a verb, it's spellt:
a) centre
b) center

it is NEVER correct to spell it "center", unless you are quoting an american institution. for example, the world trade center, the staples center, etc. i don't know why people get this wrong so often... centre NOT center.

---------

6. in october, skies are often:
a) gray
b) grey

7. you can watch 'hamlet' or 'monkey: journey to the west' at a:
a) theatre
b) theater

8. in times of war, medals are given to soldiers who display
a) valor
b) valour

9. ? ?

b) honor

10. mattias ohlund, wade redden, and zdeno chara play

bonus questions

11. manchester united
a) are the current premier league champions
b) is the current premier league champions.

12. nickelback
a) are the worst canadian band in history.
b) is the worst canadian band in history.

for bands, companies, etc. both the singular and plural forms are correct. british english sides with plural, while american english favours singular. in canada, it's a toss-up.

------

13. a newspaper that describes someone suffering an injury, would likely proceed to explain that the victim was subsequently:
a) sent/rushed to the hospital
b) sent/rushed to hospital

i'm surprised so many got this wrong. you use "the" generally when people know what the definitive is precisely representing. in this case... which hospital the victim is currently recovering in. we don't know that, so the article is not necessary.

"john david was rushed to hospital last night after his car crashed into a barrier on the side of the road..."

americans always use the article, british never, UNLESS one wants to emphasise the particular hospital in question.

--------

14. if it's not listed as 2009.01.25 then it should be listed as:
a) 25.01.09
b) 01.25.09

it's highly depressing to see how many people write month/day/year... there is no excuse for it. none. i don't care if you say january 27, but there is no logical reason for writing month/day/year. the united states are the only country to adopt such practises, whereas the rest of the world generally goes by day/month/year or in more rare cases, year/month/day.

i read an (very) amateur writer's piece a few months ago that described remembrance day as having occured "on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month, of the eleventh day..." and i pretty much gave up on the spot right there. i mean come on. if that doesn't sound awful, then what does?

it's because so many canadians are confused, that canada is one of the only countries in the world that uses year/month/day regularly to best avoid confusion.

A couple of questions.

1. Why do people go to facebook? It appears to be useless and evil.

2. Can I post in the poll even if I'm not Canadian? And if not, shouldn't the thread by rights be locked?:hyper:

nothing on my facebook is real, not even my name... and even that i change monthly. different characters are fun, kieran.

seriously, you should give it a try. you'd be fanastic on it. i have basstrap/major major major major on mine... he's further proof that you can be/do whatever you want with it.

yeah fair enough, but I was invited there once and I couldn't even see how it worked. It seemed like I just sit there with a profile, like a monkey in a tree, and periodically random strangers who also aren't real would invite me to join their page. It didn't seem like there was much scope for actual... anything.

On the whole, I'd like to keep basstrap right where he is, in chains.

I'm French-Canadian so I don't really care how the Brits do it (oh wait, my mum is from England :reject: and I do actually get what you're saying) but I chose "center" when writing it as a verb only because "centring" just seems strange as opposed to "centering" but the rest of the time I would choose centre. And so would the French if that's any consolation

this is the only point i'll concede to ... look, i'll cease writing month/day/year and even urge fellow american bumpkins to follow suit if you'll kindly pull that stick out from your ass. win-win.
