I've heard Sprite makes roses last longer. Could just be the sugar that everyone else has mentioned.

If the flowers are long stemmed, cut the stems on a harsh angle at the base to increase the amount of water that can feed up the stem. I tend to do this with all flowers though.
Sugar will work, too. Dissolve it if you can first. Some flowers prefer different things, so it depends on what you have. Also, change the water at every day or two.
:)

Yeah, cutting them is a good idea. Also, sugar or flower food stuff you can just buy. The important thing is the minerals in the water, that provides food for the plants.

Thank you everyone.

I want to bring home a flower from my Grandpa's funeral service this Thursday, and I would like it to last as long as possible.

Thanks for all the helpful tips.

Perhaps it would be suitable for drying out? Google for tips on long term preservation as well. Condolences, Fitz.

 My condoleances.

I thought of the trick I knew this morning.

I realise this may sound really stupid to some of you, but trust me on this one. I'm a chemistry student, I know what I'm talking about here.

If you REALLY want to keep flowers a bit longer, with the possibility of them being longer and faster in bloom, all you have to do is put some viagra in their water.

One blue pill and they'll stand for ages.

It's very simple actually, plants love nitrogen dioxide, viagra provides it(it makes our veins widen, which allows more blood flowing and thus filling up the erectile tissue in the male). It sort of works similar with plants. Even female ones.

Well, thanks Galeon. I love that you think I may just have Viagra lying around the house, handy and ready to throw in a vase. I'm sure it works, but I have never even laid eyes on a Viagra pill. (Until your post, I didn't even know they are colored blue.)

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I may try to have the flower framed with his memorial prayer card from the chapel service. We'll see.
