Winning in Afghanistan - Pomegranates ?

After reading this compelling but ultimately disheartening book about Afghanistan Opium Season: A Year on the Afghan Frontier: Joel Hafvenstein: Books

I came across this:

Want to Win the War in Afghanistan? Forget Guns - Think Pomegranates. | Crooks and Liars

Drink your juice !

Thanks for sharing that. It's easy to dismiss something hopeful in the midst of so much turmoil, but this initiative sounds very encouraging.

I laughed out loud at this comment: "...fighting free radicals on the cellular level so we don't have to fight them on the street level!!" Might make a great company slogan.

Heroin is far more attractive than pomegranates. The west has buying power and a need, we should buy the opium crop and use it to make drugs which governments can supply to addicts. It would hurt the black market and reduce the harm in our societies caused by the war on drugs.

It probably won't help much for people in North America. Our pomegranates are grown domestically in the U.S. And they're quite delicious too.
