Well, it is the Pope.

I was going to post pretty much this. Better to resign than have all that morbid speculation about when you'll finally cark it, too.

My first two posts were negative, yes. But I struggle to think of a position of power that is more out of touch with modern values. I remember our very own Cardinal George Pell was one of the people rumoured to replace JP2, and his views are archaic as well.

"Hey, I want to direct wry satirical commentary towards the Pope!"

"This would be a good time to do so!"

"I know!"

"But what's funny about the Catholic church?"

"Well, gee, everything!"

"You're right! I'm sure with a wealth of foibles like that, you can come up with something clever and thought-provoking that is simultaneously humorous!"

"Oh yeah, piece of cake!

...did you hear the one about the priest who raped a kid?"

Yeah, I'm sure that's what he'll be doing .

He's retiring to a monastery, not a frat house.

Really no need for the eyebrow, yes I can tell it was a joke. Just responding to deep in a deep like way.

Geesh

Of course with deep one never knows. That's what makes it so fun.

Too bad about the whole vow of celibacy thing because "I used to be Pope" is a helluva pickup line.

I don't know man. As unoriginal as some of them are, "shhh, let's not talk about it anymore" is much worse. besides, since most of them were recently rewritten with Penn State punch lines, it's almost like they're new again!

I also love "popped his/her clogs," which a British friend taught me some years ago.

What do you call a resigning Pope? Ex-Benedict!

Also Paddy Power has installed Richard Dawkins at 666-1 to be the new Pope, and Bono 1000-1.
