Some years ago, an acquaintance of mine of Cambodian descent said that she encountered the most racist behavior she'd ever experienced in Australia.

I believe she and her family were at some sort of public gathering to see fireworks. I don't remember the specifics of the incident, but it left her really shaken, to have that happen in the middle of their otherwise wonderful vacation.

I don't mean to come in here and pile on Australia, but that's always stuck with me ever since I heard it; it just made me so sad.

I actually can't remember the precise comment, but IIRC it was something about leprachauns. I am not small in stature but I just remember at the time it struck me as bizarrely inappropriate coming from a waitress in a restaurant when I'm ordering food, whereas if it was on a drunken night among friends, it would have been fair go. Possibly it was intended as a joke that backfired. No big deal in any case.

I've had great experiences in Australia. I've never experienced anything that I would have interpreted as racism. Maybe I just wasn't there long enough?

Another idiotic comment from you DEEP. There are some truth in stereotypes and you have to laugh at yourself sometimes. Everyone goes out of their way to be PC but sometimes there is truth in stereotypes.

I'm sure financeguy will admit that Irish people enjoy a drink.

I don't particularly have sympathy for many Boat people. Yeah they want to get away from horrible conditions. But when are these Nations going to embrace the responsibilities of Modernity? Like creating a safe and Just society.

Getting out of a cycle of ethnic strife or conflict requires people to change their way of life. Difficult for some.

Last year in Toronto the Tamil Tigers took over the highway.

This is a very near-sighted and irresponsible view. It's very easy to say "fix your own backyard" when you're thousands of kms away in front of a computer screen. How can you not have sympathy?

You know, it would be nice if that word were only used in situations that warranted it. This certainly isn't one of them.

But in so many lefty causes fiction trumps fact so I thought I'd use artistic license.

UUUhmmnn, no. The slaughter that they face is one degree higher on the infuraiating index.

I agree that is grating. But doing extreme actions is the only way that they can bring attention to their cause. The question is why do they do it here.

If Western countries allow anyone from any country in then these problems are going to becoe the norm.

Rather than importing refugees we need a 21st Century method to effectively export and support the Western principles of democracy, capitalism, human rights, rule of law, property ownership and such without military occupation or colonialism.

Maybe we could practice on San Fransico and Berkeley first.

Ya, because they really drummed up a lot of sympathy around these parts. It has nothing to do with their problems back home and everything to do with how they choose to bring attention to it. "hey, lets block off the busiest offramp in Toronto. That'll get people on our side". fuck right off. Not one person I know was sympathetic to them in that time. Even a Sri Lankan friend of mine was embarrassed beyond belief
