I am studying parthenogenic snails, they end up going sexual because of vulnerability to parasites, evolution in action people.

It's involuntary, in so far as the females don't actively choose a mode of reproduction, it's a function of differential survival.

The asexual reproductive mode dominates when a single female has colonised a marsh or oxbow lake, but in time the proportion of sexual reproduction increases because parasites render the asexual forms sterile.

The ones I'm looking at are a little bit old though, 110 million years
