I came across this wired.com article today: ‘Holographic Duality’ Hints at Hidden Subatomic World

I think it's fascinating that there is so much about our universe we don't understand. And to think - there is so much more to discover...

According to modern quantum theory, energy fields permeate the universe, and flurries of energy in these fields, called “particles” when they are pointlike and “waves” when they are diffuse, serve as the building blocks of matter and forces. But new findings suggest this wave-particle picture offers only a superficial view of nature’s constituents.

If each energy field pervading space is thought of as the surface of a pond, and waves and particles are the turbulence on that surface, then the new evidence strengthens the argument that a vibrant, hidden world lies beneath

Interesting read, but I don't think you could find anyone but a string theorist who would claim string theory "weaves together quantum mechanics and gravity and is... mathematically elegant and profoundly explanatory". String theory is a mess. In fact, there isn't even one string theory. There's like 20 of them. All different; all making different predictions and requiring different dimensions.
Also, energy fields don't "permeate the universe". an energy field isn't even a real thing. If the author wants to talk about photons or electrons or what have you, that's one thing, but what he's describing sounds more like the ether or new age pseudoscience.
"holographic" is probably a bad choice of words too, as I'm sure it will influence peoples' ideas of what it means.

The quantum world is spooky, however

Cool link though, despite all my bitching and moaning

Here's a video from one of my favorite theoretical physicists, Dr. Leonard Susskind from Stanford (of course, he doesn't compare to Sheldon Cooper). He gives a fairly decent description of the "Holographic Universe" theory - if you have about an hour to spare...

The thing that really blows my mind about current (or at least my sense of "current," which is admittedly limited) quantum physics is dark matter.
