There's nothing wrong with breaking the pattern from one generation to the next. That IS a critical issue and if both parents don't do that it will continue. A mother can and should have equal influence on how a boy->man treats women. I agree that raising the bar for fathers is, in general, a great idea. They should want to raise the bar for themselves, so should mothers.
A girl should be raised to value herself for who she is, not who any man thinks she is or for what any man can do for her. To stand alone, happily. That way she will be better equipped to be independent and have self esteem and to avoid creeps and jerks and chauvinists.
I never even gave that any thought to that John Mayer song and the lyrics. Frankly I just love "fathers be good to your daughters too" just because of what has always felt so lacking in my personal experience. Don't like him but I like that.That song just kind of makes me sad, honestly. Just that phrase.
