^great letter JC.....you have no idea what an a** Dave Marsh is. . his only claim to fame is his association with Bruce Springsteen.... he is in the "inner circle"(his wife Barbara Carr works for Bruce).... and trust me he glossed over many ..many facts of his 'idol' Bruce in the biography he wrote..(and what he left out i do know for a fact) ... and don't get me wrong ... i love Bruce ..... but the things he left out ..well .. wouldn't put Bruce in the best light .. but this is about the article on Bono he wrote ....why? who knows .. jealousy..envy...pissed that they didn't pay enough taxes??(which really is none of anyones business)... we all know u2 individually and as a band do more than most for charities).. or some way to make himself relevant..cause he sure ain't that relevant now ... it's maybe a way to get in the news ... anything you write or say to him will be shot down with his intellectual sarcasm....i met him years and years ago in the "Spingsteen' 80s") and could not stand him then and really can't stand him now......you should frame those moronic responses he sent you... wow.. what an intellect he is ... he was probably sitting there knowing the backlash he would get from U2 fans ... and had these responses ready .... he probably never got so many e-mails in his whole career.... as for, Bono , i hope he just ignores him ... cause you know this moron will try to corner him backstage when they tour ..... probably will use his 'wifes' name to get tickets& passes..lol....

I think Bono pretty much put his point of view out there on Acrobat, Stand Up Comedy, and Crazy Tonight; Hence the Trotskyite comment from McGuinness. Bono is not far left. He wants more money to get rid of "stupid poverty" as opposed to equal outcomes. I think the aid is helpful but obviously it's not going to change countries to the point of self-sufficiency. It's also apparent in songs like Breathe that Bono really is worried about not achieving divine Grace. So there's a personal spiritual interest in his endeavors.

I was pissed off though about Bono cutting off Mwenda. Bono supports the low taxes of Ireland (though not low enough for him) but also tries to say the education spending in Ireland lead to the Irish tiger. Well funding for schooling is fine if there's jobs waiting at the other end. Under communism everyone got education but when you graduate then where are the jobs? The most thorough way to handle the problem would be for African countries to embrace democracy, private property rights, and trade. This will take a long time since there are special interests that use coersion to prevent their power from spreading to a middle class.

This interview pretty much sums up Bono's opinion on the subject and he quotes Jesus that we won't be able to eliminate all poverty. He's focused on extreme poverty.

I also think I remember an article where Brad Pitt talked about laying on the bed and telling Angelina that he had enough of the parties and the lifestyle. He wanted to be involved in something beyond himself instead of the typical hollywood life. I think when some people get really wealthy they get bored and exhausted by superficiality that they have an emotional need to be involved in a real way and social activism is usually what they turn to.
 
Awesome post ^ those interviews were from Willow Creek...you would think Marsh would have done more investigating on the matter. It just proves even more what a cry baby he is over loosing his debate.

liked him. Now since your so called debate has been canceled, your
article sounds more like a lover scorned.

And Third, I don't know Bono personally, but have met him a number of
times. I think he is genuine. Instead of downsizing the philanthropy he
has created, why not join in? You put a negative spin on his antidotes
for the worlds hungry. May I ask, what have you done lately?
Me? You can ask because I have done plenty, thanks to Bono. Just because one
person says they were the only African, “at a party to raise
money for Africans, and there were no Africans in the room, except for
that one person,” or so many other Africans have complained that he speaks for them
but has never so much as asked their permission doesn't mean that it is the whole continent
that feels thay way. Maybe someone should take the long journey to Africa and ask the
people how much better things are through Bonos outreach and ideas. People now have
clean water wells, mosquito nets, aids/malaria medications and put over 25,000 or more
children in school. Ask the people who have benefited if they mind if Bono speaks on
their behalf. Their lives are better now because of him.

Lastly, Bono did you a favor by reneging on the debate. He is way too informed
on the subject matter and way to smart to fall for any journalists wise cracked questions.
He would have made you look more foolish on the airwaves than your article already suggests.

Sounds like a guy with issues, possibly an inferiority complex of some sort. Probably common enough among rock journalists. Pity about that, as it takes attention away from the (in my opinion) legitimate criticisms that were raised by Marsh regarding the politics of celebrity do-gooders, especially Bono.

Yeah, the man has issues.

I enjoy opposition and debate within reason. He has resorted to name calling which to me takes all his clout away. I teach it to my kindergarteners, when someone calls you a name its just because they can't think of anything to say that makes sense.

I thought your e-mail was fine, too. It seems that when Marsh doesn't know what to say, he comes across as very childish and rude.

Bono is still far left, remember what he said about an Israeli dream and a Palestinian dream? Remember the way he tagged that bit on the end about a Palestinian dream, thinking no-one would notice? It's a really far left kind of extreme viewpoint to talk of such things as a Palestinian dream, communists talk like that. I only hope Bono is not an Al Qaeda sympathiser, like most communists and social democrats.

I was really culturally shocked that he would be so bold and daring. Really daring and provocative stuff.

I really don't know what the big deal is with Bono saying "a Palestinian dream."

Can't people dream of peace and no war in the world? Why would people want countries to fight or have civil wars take place? To have a dream that people won't die of that fighting and of war. I don't think that wanting peace in the world and especially in the middle east makes you a leftest, a communist, daring, bold nor is it provocative.
It makes you human.

I don't think he tagged it on the end so no one would notice, he paused so people would notice.

Reverse the meaning of every single clause in my post, you will see what I am saying.

To be clear, tagging a meek little '...and a Palestinian dream' onto his speech is not bold, daring or provocative and Bono is not far left - not now and never has been.

My idea of far left is communism. They are not communists. From Edge's own words they are social democrats. Communists are obsessed about nationalization of all companies. The band members believe in markets existing and private ownership but they differ from conservatives in that they want large amounts of redistributionism. Of course it's easy to look at Edge's Malibu home and the band's insistance that they move the company's finances to a tax haven for artists and say that in practice they are no different from any rich people. McGuiness and Bono have already made some positive comments about generally low taxes in Ireland being helpful. I don't expect consistent remarks from rock stars and their managers. :D The economist did a study some years back and found that most people said yes to more spending and lower taxes despite the contradiction.

So in words and what they say they usually sound like democratic socialists but they clearly didn't like the overly Marxist punk rock movement and reacted against it from the beginning. Pure Communism is such a dead idea in North America that how I was taught in Poli Sci class is that socialism would be redistributionists (over 50% or more GDP controlled by the government via spending programs). Basically some European countries like Sweden are like that (though they lowered their corporate taxes greatly). Even neo-conservatives agree to some safety net, though not at the levels of a social democrat. The left and right have been moving to the center for a long time.

Since I've discovered this rating system I've been looking at Economic Freedom differently because redistributionism is not the only aspect of government intervention. Law and regulation have a either positive or negative affect on the how free people feel:

Country rankings for trade, business, fiscal, monetary, financial, labor and investment freedoms

I'm sure I've learned a lot since my first posts so please understand that. As much as I like to have an opinion on everything I'm not God. My intention as I get older is to never stop improving my knowledge and learning never stops for me. I also hope that those who debate here or anywhere have a similar attitude. Trying to discover politics, economics, philosophy, and science is not easy when that's not your field of expertise. :D It's popular to do the specialization route because we need it for work but it's still important to keep general knowledge of other paths so we don't get too much tunnel vision.

“Cannot”? I don’t need permission to call him Queen of the May. And I think it’s really a “must” situation—so that all can remember, and never forget, that this boastful Irishmen bent the knee to the queen of the land’s historic enemy, merely the most open of his traitorous acts.

Darling, it really really wasn’t my idea and I was fucking dreading spending an hour listening to the pompous little shit prattling on. And I’ve been sandblasting the motherfucker for about 20 years so let’s lay that particular line of star-struck bullshit to rest, OK? I did NOT “offer” him a debate. He proposed one to me. If you continue to say that the situation was otherwise, I will bring so many witnesses to the slander trial, you’ll think you’re at a U2 show.

You are welcome to consider Bono “genuine.” I have been observing him for many years and have come to the conclusion that he is a fraud.

I would not piss on your misperceptions but you wrote to me, directly, so I am responding.

As to who is better informed, we could have seen but the singer took the coward’s way out.

I do appreciate you responding to me, not matter how rude and crude you replied. It is obvious that we are at different ends of the spectrum on the subject at hand.

Sometimes if you take a stand in the world you can move it. The stand you have taken, isn't moving anything.
