You never know, that could've been a part of it, too. War fucks people up.
For the record he never went to war. On an unrelated note, most who come back from war can settle back in fine. I think it was 6% of returning iraq war veterans suffered from PTSD, or something like that.

No, but he worked with people who did and had to listen to horrific stories. So maybe not that specific disorder, then, but I'm sure that dealing with people like that day in and day out and seeing fellow soldiers dealing with the mental and physical effects of war messes with your mind some.

That I find awfully hard to believe. I've heard that the suicide rate is extremely high right now in the Army and that a lot of people coming back have had serious mental problems and have lashed out at those around them. If that's indeed true, that's a pretty surprising statistic.

Well this isn't true. Just because you don't come back with a diagnosis of PTSD doesn't mean you "settle back in fine". First of all PTSD is still extremely underdiagnosed. Extremely. Secondly there are many that can seem to "settle in fine" but internally are not.

My Grandfather came back from the war, raised three boys seemed to have "settled in fine" and then twenty years later took his own life leaving behind a letter talking about the war.

^I think the film Band of Brothers really captures how war damages you, even if you don't have any physical wounds. It really deepened my respect for soldiers. It gives a whole new meaning to the word sacrifice.

My dad does volunteer work at the local VA hospital. Whenever you think they "settle back in fine," go down to your local VA facility and hang out. I dare you.

Yes indeed. Everyone in this country should have to do that. We are shielded from reality.

Settle back in fine? Unbelievable.

Agree. Human beings were not created to murder each other. Regardless of whether or not it may be sometimes tragically necessary is a subject for another thread, but the taking of a life is a trauma that I don't think anyone ever recovers from.

ABSOLUTELY 100% RIGHT!

As necessary as some wars are, you won't get anyone who was ever really in a war to take a John Wayne style glorification of war stance.

Its always horrible, anyone glorifying it is either insane or lying.

John Wayne would have shit his pants if he was ever anywhere near a real war.

^I don't know why we villify John Wayne though.

It's not as if films used to glorify war but now they don't.

He was such a "patriot," such a right-wing hawk who never went to war.

And continental Europeans are having a tough go at it lately, fiscally. Tough enough to warn America to slow down its own deficit spending.

On social issues I think FYM is in tune with Europe.

On top of what others said, isn't the divorce rate in the military like 75% or something absurd like that?

Ireland, Latvia, and Estonia are certainly Eurodollar heavyweights

I'm watching their currency moving down.

Germany gets some props, but then again...

we're distracting from the Palin obsession thread
