If I'm hanging out with and helping someone who is mentally ill, I'm thinking taking them to a shooting range would not be the best idea in the world.

Anywho, yeah, we've had quite a few people coming in to buy his book in recent weeks. I appreciate and respect his attempts to help people who struggled with PTSD and other disabilities, and I'm sorry to his family for their tragic loss.

Depends on the person and his or her symptoms really. Shooting's actually been a great stress reliever for many vets who have PTSD. I mean shit, the VA kicked Eddie Routh (the shooter) out of a VA hospital days prior against his family's wishes, so he wasn't going to get the help he needs from them. (Nor do many)

PTSD is widely misunderstood. It has a wide range of symptoms from mild to severe. I'm afraid that after this other vets with PTSD (or even those who don't) will be labeled as crazy. Even though most vets with PTSD have normal jobs and normal families.

That being said however, Routh was definitely of the small percentage with severe and dangerous PTSD. His sister described him as "psychotic," and he definitely should not have been handed a gun. After he killed Chris and his friend, he went back to his sisters and told her he killed them because he panicked and thought they were trying to kill him. I don't know how much Chris knew of Routh's PTSD symptoms, but I would imagine neither himself nor his friend knew how derailed his state of mind actually was. But we'll never know I suppose.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that happens, unfortunately. We as a society tend to do a rather poor job of knowing what various mental conditions actually are.

He was far from perfect, but I agree.

I'd swap his death for Thatcher's any time.

My great granduncle didn't die in WW2 so I would have to wait a few extra seconds for my room to light up.
