Pro-tax Occupation Protests Held Across U.S. (O.W.S. Thread)

I don't think that's an appropriate use of pepper spray. I think the officers have been placed on leave, suspended-whatever they want to call it.
paid leave too i bet. nice that people in the public sector can do whatever they want and then get to sit at home and still receive a salary. look at it this way: if a security guard pepper sprayed you when you were peacefully protesting, would you consider suing the company or at least making sure the guy got fired? ridiculous. i don't hate the police, but they sure can make themselves unlikeable sometimes.

Many of them don't have jobs, you complacent moron.

But maybe you'd prefer if they stayed at home gorging themselves on junk food and, I dunno, smoking cigarettes and watching shit soap operas on television or some such.

You hold yourself out as some great keeper of the spirit of historic traditional American values or whatever, but actually the last time I checked, revolution is innately a part of US history, and innately a part of history full stop, anywhere and everywhere. And the super-rich have been screwing the middle and working classes for a long time now - that's just economic fact. So maybe it's time for another revolution, how about that then?

Maybe that's your problem, maybe that's a lot of Christians' problem. You want your rebels to be safely tucked away in a historical box in the Bible, like the big JC. When a contemporary real-life rebellion presents itself, you run off home with the tail between your legs.
This fell off the radar near the end of the default page post count, FG, but I just wanted to say I think this is some of your best work in this subforum.

U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) slammed Occupy Wall Street protesters during a town hall meeting in suburban Gurnee, Ill. Saturday, calling the movement a "well-orchestrated, well-funded, far left effort to disrupt the American people" before admitting that he had never attended a protest.

Walsh, a Tea Party favorite who apologized last week after screaming at a constituent during a similar event, was reacting to constituent criticism of the Occupy movement when he let them know how he felt about it.

"[Occupy is] an anti-American, well-funded left wing effort," Walsh told the crowd, to a mix of applause and boos. He also said the movement was created to "rile up Obama's left base."

From what he could tell, Walsh said, Occupy protesters are "generally spoiled, pampered, unfocused, clueless young people and a smattering of other people who don’t understand this country and are advocating anti-American solutions."

When one constituent stood up and pointed out that veterans have participated in the Occupy movement, Walsh brushed it off.

"I don't know how many veterans are part of the Occupy protest," he said. "I can't imagine it's many. But anyone who would advocate socialist solutions to certain problems in this country ... they don't understand this country."

Though much of the crowd seemed to support Walsh's stance, a few others stood up. An older woman told Walsh that Occupy protesters were not all "young socialists," but real people who "want jobs."

A middle-aged man named Doug also stood up, and told Walsh that he participated in the Occupy Chicago protest on Thursday.

"These are real people, with real problems and the government is not addressing their problems," Doug said. "They're giving priority to big corporations and multi-millionaires. They were able to bail out the big corporations, but when it comes to the average person, they've done very little. These are real people that are very frustrated and they have no other outlet."

After hearing from Doug and other constituents, Walsh seemed to tone down his rhetoric -- a little.

"Both Republicans and Democrats want us to have jobs again," Walsh said, adding that the parties just had different ideas about how to accomplish that. He then said that Democrats want government to do a lot, but Occupy wants "government to do everything."

"The Tea Party movement is a real movement," Walsh said. "And it's bigger than either political party."

Maybe Newt could create some jobs for them with all the millions he gets from FannieMae/Freddie Mac and elsewhere

This Saturday, Republican candidates for president gathered around for a “Thanksgiving table forum” debate hosted by Christian group Family Leader, and while the debate was as notable for its absences (Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman abstained; the latter having a surprise SNL date) as much as for the emotional declarations of the candidates, it was Newt Gingrich who delivered the applause line of the night, telling Occupy Wall Street, “go get a job after you take a bath.”

Gingrich, asked to elaborate on his opinion of the group, quoted Thomas Jefferson and John Smith, the latter particularly telling settlers they could not eat if they did not work, which, to Gingrich, embedded a “deep sense of responsibility” in the American psyche. In contrast, Gingrich argued that Occupy movement was grounded in entitlement– “all the Occupy movement starts with the premise that we all owe them everything.” With that in mind, Gingrich explained that their point was to “self-righteously explain that they are the paragons of virtue to which we owe everything,” which was indicative of “how the left has collapsed as a moral system.” Gingrich concluded with a flourish that the group needs to “go get a job after you take a bath” to raucous applause, and the praise of federal candidate Herman Cain.

Class warfare for the right is the middle class turning on the upper class.

Class warfare for the left is the middle class being turned against the lower class by people like Gingrich.

There is not the chance in hell that they would allow an occupation of the actual capitol building. Stick with the Mall.

Exactly. I could just imagine the right screaming that the Socialist Marxist Muslims were trying to stage a coup and impose Sharia law. The Mall would be perfect especially if they want to focus on putting pressure on the politicians.

Of course it was uncalled for. That's not what I'm saying, if you read my post.

I misunderstood you. I should probably clarify my statement. There are cops who are decent, respectful of the public, and do their jobs. They work hard and 'serve and protect'. Then there are the pigs. Those are the ones who abuse their authority, act like para military authoritarians, treat everyone like criminals, would pepper spray protesters without being provoked or are the first ones to pull out a baton and start swinging. Not all cops are pigs, but there are enough of them out there hiding behind that thin blue line that ruins the reputation of law enforcement. At least in my eyes.

Quote of the day:

“A stupid man’s idea of what a smart person sounds like."

-- Paul Krugman on Newt Gingrich

Well then, there are a lot of people on the left who fit Krugman's description of being stupid. Sharpton, Dean, Clinton, etc.

He's a piss pour historian. The first group to settle Jamestown was made up of 'gentlemen' and the sons of the nobles. They felt entitled and would rather sit around or look for gold and then expected everyone else to provide for them.

So he was really telling the 1% to work if they wanted to eat. Newt was for the OWS movement before he was against it.

He's also against child labor laws

Clinton is many things, but being stupid is not one of them.

“The one thing that makes it very hard to count him out is he’s always thinking. He’s always got a bunch of new ideas and some of them are pretty good. So a guy that can still use his brain cells and come up with good ideas, you’re never really sure what happens there."
- Bill Clinton on Newt Gingrich

By Krugman's definition, he is. Or can we just admit that Krugman threw that meaningless statement out there- which he can't operationalize in any way- as a way to sound intelligent and get partisans like Jeannieco to have a good laugh out of it?

No, he's right. Someone like Newt sounds like a genius to the intellectual heavyweights that now make up the Republican Party. Newt is a piece of shit with no grasp of history or interest in the common good.

Care to back that up?

You have to examine who Newt's GOP contemporaries are. It doesn't take much to shine in this current crop, you have to admit.

Newt in the 90s and the 90s is a whole difffeent situation.

Newt in 2012 is not a real contender.

and that whole fire union janitors and put the local 14 year olds to work cleaning their school bath rooms so they can learn a work ethic, is bizarre.

that would make a nice loopy commercial

There is nothing moderate about Gingrich. He is a right wing loon and always has been. Only in the bizarro world of modern day Republican politics would he be considered moderate.

I get the sense at this point that the 'moderates' are the guys or girls who don't wake up in the cemetary of a morning covered in animal blood.

To be fair is to know that she willingly put herself and her spawn at risk by going to protests when we have had a month's worth of evidence that police are actively pepper-spraying the public at these events. She had no business being there.

But I gotta be seen at the scene!

Well we could take a cue from you and;

A. Pretend it didn't happen.
B. Defend and pout that it's only a small minority.
C. Blame AstroTurf
D. All of the above

How very literate of you, Kieran.

The moderates, I would suggest, are those that wish to replace the current bankster bailout system with the normal democratic system.

The super-rich, the uber-wealthy, the thieving robbing scumbag bastards - they declared war on us. And in return, we will give them both barrels.

And, in the long term we shall win, because we have the numbers.

Where would you even begin if you wanted to debate the idiocy on display here?

I'm confused.

Who exactly are you arguing with here?

The overwhelming majority of the posters on this forum have been critical/skeptical of the OWS movement.
