Why does it have to be one or the other all the time? "Moderately concerned" is not an option?

Thank you.

For God's sake, is anyone harmed if you turn off a fucking lightbulb when you don't have any use for it, or if you recycle a box instead of just tossing it out? I'm certain neither are a sign of spineless treehuggery, or the extinction of morality in American society. Conversely, I'm not certain Armageddon will quickly proceed the arbitrary date Al Gore has set for our collective demise if we don't open our pocket books and help his cause.

Even if you don't have much altruistic interest, your family and friends live here, so why wouldn't you want to do what it takes to make their future a little brighter (a little brighter, mind you; their lives are likely not in the balance at this juncture)? Besides, it's always good to think about something outside yourself, even if it's merely a simplistic, cartoonish personification of the planet you live on. But don't be a sheep. Check the facts, listen to the arguments offered by both sides, think for yourself, and do your part accordingly.

Wow. This is an email I just received.

I realize the three of us may not share the same political views, which is healthy since we live in a free society. However, I also never miss the opportunity to pass on to you guys my feelings about everything you "see and read" in the main frame media. Always remember this - they have an agenda, whether you believe it or not - it is what "they" want you to believe, as opposed to what you need to believe because you became educated about the facts.

One thought for you guys to know - the founder of "Earth Day" is a mass murderer now in jail now…the last person that made it to the FBI's most wanted list is an environmentalist, the son of Sam was an environmentalist, the Uni Bomber is an environmentalist and a murderer now in jail….and there are many many more - just a thought for you guys.

Now take the time to read this - it is someone else's view of earth - someone not very respected today - Earth Day, however he touched millions of lives in our "Earth" with his movies and books - Michael Crichton. As you read it, think about what he is trying to tell you - it takes five minutes - please read it for yourselves and not me.

Happy "Earth Day" - with irony

Dad

Rush devoted about an hour to this today...

When you either don't care, don't understand, or just flat out deny science due to selfish political reasons this is what you come up with...

It's a fucked up world we live in. I think a third of these kids are onto something...

I think my dad is onto something. If you care about the environment you clearly have homicidal tendencies. :tsk:

BTW, I did some research and his FACTS OF TRUTH are more sketchy than Garfield.
Ira Einhorn claimed to be a co-founder of Earth Day, but it's been disputed. (By the liberal media, OF COURSE!!!) He also wasn't a mass murder, having killed his ex-girlfriend and then fleeing the country. The real founder was a Senator who never killed anyone.
The last person to get on the FBI's most wanted list is an animal-rights activist, not an environmentalist.
I don't know where he got the info of Son of Sam being an environmentalist. I can't find any evidence of that anywhere. He is, however, a born-again Christian.
The unabomber actually is an environmentalist, so that's 1 for 5.
and there are many many more
Many more, huh? Any of you guys wanna fess up??

Anyone against going green is simply lazy and looking for an excuse to continue to be lazy.

It's much easier to argue against change than for it.

I think apocalypse is a fairly common childhood fear. What differs from generation to generation is the imagined manifestation of an apocalypse. So, it's certainly not surprising that the current generation is imagining environmental disaster to be the culprit of any supposed apocalyptic scenario occurring in their minds. It's the issue of the day, the same as nuclear war was in previous generations.

Or understands economics. If renewable energy made sense money-wise the marketplace would have have embraced it long ago. Renewable energy is only feasible today with heavy government subsidization. Technologies may improve but expect a lower standard of living if the Obama plan goes through.

Nuclear energy on the other hand makes great sense if you want to "save" the planet and maintain our high standard of living. Much of the world is waking up to this, when will Washington?

I was always been more affraid of the Zombie Apocalypse myself, but I think that's because I saw Dawn Of The Dead when I was like 5 or 6...

You and I both know this is BS. There's also a factor in economics and business that is lazy and scared of change, why change if you're making millions. Just look at the American automobile industry, they stopped being truly innovative, BUT for years still made millions off past legacy, now it caught up with them.

Everyone knows that change costs in the short run.

Well if we're judging standard of living by how big your SUV is then you are probably correct, but maybe one should reevaluate their measure of standard of living...

In case you forgot:

Do you believe if we just keep keeping on with the status quo that the planet will never be effected?

or the fact that decades of pornographic subsidies and tax breaks to Exxon Mobil, not to mention the funding of wars to "protect oil," have done much to hinder (if not outright target for destruction) the economic viability of wind/solar/renewable energy.

the oil will run out. the burning of fossil fuels will roast the planet.

nuclear energy is an option that needs to be explored, among with many others.

Lower standard of living = less stuff = more free time = more time for Christ = fulfillment of the ideal. Isn't that what we want? Sounds like a win/win w00t w00t to me.
= less income to give to charities
= less capital to invest in tomorrow's life saving technologies and drugs
= less funds for pollution, conservation of wildlife, etc
= greater suffering

Works both ways. Money and opulence isn't the sin, it's the idolatry of them.

To have an advantage over your competitor or to keep new competitors out of the market.

Just look at the American automobile industry, they stopped being truly innovative, BUT for years still made millions off past legacy, now it caught up with them.
Here's what happened. The government, rather than the marketplace, started mandating what type car they had to build. People rejected them for pickups and SUVs. And labor costs make them uncompetitive price wise.

But if you think there isn't innovation in the automotive industry just watch an INDYCAR or F1 race this weekend.

Michael Crichton is almost as bad as Dan Brown (though I did like The Sphere) so anything he says I disregard as bullshit hack work and then I move on.

I will never bash Crichton because he created ER and pushed Noah Wyle into my household every Thursday night for years and years. :sexywink:

um, what? Japanese and German cars were simply better, more reliable, and got better gas mileage. the only thing that helped the American automobile market in 1990s was getting SUVs classified as "light trucks" rather than the actual trucks they were, and that was due to lots of political pressure from Detroit.

if there's any example of a free market destroying an industry, it's the American automobile industry. you're right about labor costs -- Americans can't live of $1.50 an hour and no bathroom breaks.
