Lower standard of living = less stuff = more free time = more time for Christ = fulfillment of the ideal. Isn't that what we want? Sounds like a win/win w00t w00t to me.

= less income to give to charities
= less capital to invest in tomorrow's life saving technologies and drugs
= less funds for pollution, conservation of wildlife, etc
= greater suffering

Works both ways. Money and opulence isn't the sin, it's the idolatry of them.

To have an advantage over your competitor or to keep new competitors out of the market.

Just look at the American automobile industry, they stopped being truly innovative, BUT for years still made millions off past legacy, now it caught up with them.
Here's what happened. The government, rather than the marketplace, started mandating what type car they had to build. People rejected them for pickups and SUVs. And labor costs make them uncompetitive price wise.

But if you think there isn't innovation in the automotive industry just watch an INDYCAR or F1 race this weekend.

But GM was just living off the "buy American" mentality for years, and they've had the inferior car for over a decade.

I will never bash Crichton because he created ER and pushed Noah Wyle into my household every Thursday night for years and years.

um, what? Japanese and German cars were simply better, more reliable, and got better gas mileage. the only thing that helped the American automobile market in 1990s was getting SUVs classified as "light trucks" rather than the actual trucks they were, and that was due to lots of political pressure from Detroit.

if there's any example of a free market destroying an industry, it's the American automobile industry. you're right about labor costs -- Americans can't live of $1.50 an hour and no bathroom breaks.
