So, what ball am I dropping? Am I supposed to be deep and intentionally take a devil's advocate approach that borders on trolling? I think the GOP is nuts, but if we're going to talk about that, I'd like to be challenged by someone who genuinely feels differently.

You're bitching a lot, but what are you doing to change things? Go out there, kidnap a bunch of right wingers, then make them register and start posting here, damn it!

Get to it, kiddo!!

I know indra is being playful here, but I agree with what she's saying.

Yes, FYM has gotten dry and dull, but that doesn't mean we should complain about it. Do something! I'm posting threads, though they may not be attracting heated debates, but I'm making an effort here.

I agree that FYM has gotten one-sided where we complain about U.S. conservatives and I do wish right-wingers would come here to debate with us. Maybe we should tone down our leftist rhetoric so we wouldn't scare off anyone who is conservative? Granted, some conservative politicians make me bang my head against the top of my desk, but why not give some a break?

I wouldn't come in here if I was a conservative either.

I'm a conservative. I still read this board quite frequently, but I don't post a ton lately, because I rarely have the energy to defend my posts against 10+ people's rather vitriolic arguments.

Where is it? All I see is a bunch of leftists going "Oh man, look what these Republicans did now! What an outrage!" Like, is that someone's idea of fun? I know this forum has always leaned left but now it just seems that everyone agrees with everyone.

You missed my Monty Python reference. :(

OK. I love this.

I am just so sick of the echo chamber in this forum. I want to debate, not complain about people who are not reading this and will not respond. Every post these days feels like it's arguing with a straw man. There is barely any exchange of ideas.

I agree.

I'm not a fan of Pat Robertson and as a Christian I disagree with some
of his views.

But what PhilsFan stated is true about the exchange of ideas here.

We can do better methinks.

We have topics. There is a thread about the GOP. Do you know what's in it? No Republicans or conservatives. Just a bunch of liberals bitching about the right. I mean, we can't force people of a different viewpoint to post, but is it not also somewhat the fault of the people here not making anyone feel welcome?

It just feels like there's a collective piling on here with liberals who want to bitch and moan about conservatives over and over again, essentially unchallenged.

So, what ball am I dropping? Am I supposed to be deep and intentionally take a devil's advocate approach that borders on trolling? I think the GOP is nuts, but if we're going to talk about that, I'd like to be challenged by someone who genuinely feels differently.

Basically this is the hand you are dealt--a left-heavy forum. We can all not talk and have everyone drift away and then perhaps the conservatives will come back until the whole process starts all over. Who is there to blame?
The election is over. There's not much politically to talk about. Taxes? Gun control? Maybe it's just a lull. Maybe it's more permanent than that.

Now many of the recent vaunted liberal/conservative debates were 10 pages of two or three posters repeating themselves and the conversation not moving forward one iota, which is BORING! too. Dueling monologues, dueling talking points. Tedium. Didn't hear anything I hadn't heard a hundred times before. But the posters may have been having a good time. Fine for them. Seriously.

Now and again you had a very interesting thread when there were a bunch of posters of different sides, each bringing something a little different to the table. (Or maybe that was just a fantasy:hmm:) No, there were some good talks.

I don't just miss the conservatives (some of them). I miss the moderates or at least those who took thoughtful looks at both sides and gave objective analysis. Sean doesn't post as much anymore. Yolland doesn't post at all.
Irvine is sporadic. People get bored or live their lives or just drift away.

You are a sports journalist. OK, your genre is the closest thing to political you can find. Sports pundits, black and white positions, opposing sides (fans) who hate each other, 24/7 coverage with much minutia. Now you are going to need to write columns (if that is what you eventually want to do) that are going to interest people who agree with you and who don't. So you're going to have to find a twist.

Or you wait.

I do find it a little ironic that the last few posters in the thread before you chose to vent were some of the least likely to alienate the conservative posters.:D

FYM really isn't that left wing, in my view. It skews a bit middle-class US liberal, which is not the same thing at all. Understandably so.

I agree. I'm usually more left than people on here by a lot, though I right separate social and economic politics when considering where I am on the charts.

It's not that left-wing, but it's very homogeneously middle-class US liberal.

Agreed, I'm what you'd call far left and I can't really relate to anyone's opinions here outside of social issues such as same-sex marriage/abortion/etc.

Many in the United States would insist that there is no significant gap between you and Barack Obama.

I know, it really makes me sad that there are people who think that, and that there are a lot of them.

I think Sean Hannity uses the phrase "far leftist radical" on an hourly basis when he talks about Obama. And if you were here in FYM the last few years, you know some believe that line hook, line, and sinker.

When you ask them for examples... well that's an entirely different story.

I think that's the biggest reason things have gotten so heated in here. There have been some conservative posters here over the years who've managed to have great, healthy debates with the more liberal-minded, and there's even been times that both sides have come to agreement on certain things.

But with some of the more recent stuff, it's hard to really have much patience anymore for anyone who espouses the same old, "Gay marriage will hurt society!"/"Obama is a secret socialist" stuff of that sort, and unfortunately that cropped up in some discussions. I'm certainly sorry if any conservatives feel like they've been chased away from here, and definitely can sympathize with them having to go head to head with a group of people by themselves. But at the same time, if they're going to reiterate the sorts of beliefs I just alluded to, when there are facts to clearly contradict such beliefs, and when they're surrounded by people whom those beliefs directly insult, and so on, then it really shouldn't be a surprise to them that people are going to get angry and frustrated. You can be a conservative and not go to the "gay marriage is bad and Obama's a socialist" well, and if you do, then be prepared to deal with people confronting you about it.

And sometimes it became hard to tell whether or not they were serious or joking. If they were serious, that's upsetting, and if they were joking, well, it's cute and funny at first, but after a while it gets rather old.

I absolutely agree with this. It did get frustrating and that's probably why us liberals got so hostile toward conservatives because some of them didn't care who they were hurting.

As for everyone else, here's what I suggest: take risks here and start a thread for debate - about anything you think would be good to talk about. Don't hesitate, don't coyly bring up your beliefs that you firmly believe in, and don't wait for someone else to open the door of opportunity for you. In other words, take action around here! You want to chat about polyamory? Start a thread. You're curious about anarchy? Start a thread. You want to discuss neo-pagan religions? Start a thread. There's plenty of room to discuss many things here.

What I am saying is, go for it. Of course, be open to debate and get ready for anyone pointing out whatever flaws you have in your viewpoint. But, really - don't hesitate if you really want to share with others whatever interests you or what you think could provide a good topic. And if you're not an American, feel free to add some global spice in here with a thread about Russia or India or wherever; we could use it.

At the risk of presenting as a hypocrite (after all I start few if any threads), I would wager that part of the problem is the tendency for threads here to be 'ripped from the headlines'.

OMG somebody in (insert state/city here) did such and such.

OMG.

Hey Iron Horse, in the friendliest way possible, I'd suggest that your posts could help the situation around here a bit. You obviously like reading and posting here, but so often, your responses are little more than slogans that skirt around the discussions. I know you must have some interesting perspectives to add. Just go out on a limb sometimes and speak for yourself; you seem very guarded. As often as you post here, I don't think anyone has a sense of your real personality. Open up a little

Anyone else think part of the problem with discussion here and in society in general (I'm looking at you, USA) is that everyone is so focused on "the left" or "the right". It's almost become like a sporting event where you're playing/cheering for your team against the other. It's way too over simplified. I refuse to label myself in any such way. I'd like to think I actually consider issues individually before making up my mind what side of the debate I'll be on. Some issues I'd be on the 'left', some on the 'right', and as such those labels are meaningless. They only serve to give people a team to cheer for and a kneejerk group to blame when things don't go your way

IMO, that's exactly the problem.

Pat Robertson's? I don't know. Fighting the Civil War?

That was his grandparents.

His parents were Southerners fighting a different battle.

Civil Rights.

Absalom Willis Robertson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robertson was a typical Byrd Democrat, and was very conservative on social issues. He was chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs from 1959 until 1966. In 1956, Robertson was one of the 19 senators who signed The Southern Manifesto, condemning the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education and the resulting public desegregation.

When President Lyndon Johnson sent his wife, Lady Bird, on a train trip through the South to encourage support for the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, Robertson was one of four Southern Senators who refused to meet with her on the whistle-stop trip.
