The word is that it will flame up militant Islam.

A further point to this, and to anyone who thinks that retaliation is a good idea. It might even be a wise miliatry strategy to let him live. One of the lessons of ethnic conflict is that you create a whole new generations of disgruntled people who have lived through war related problems.

I don't think so.

Al Qaeda member surrenders, Saudi Arabia says

In the wake of Osama bin Laden's demise, is al Qaeda falling apart?

The Saudi Interior Ministry said today that a senior al Qaeda member on Riyadh's most-wanted list named Khaled al-Qahtani called from abroad and turned himself in.

"Interior Ministry's spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said in a statement Wednesday that Khaled Hathal Abdullah al-Atifi al-Qahtani contacted the security authorities from an undisclosed country and expressed his wish to come home," the Associated Press reports.

"Al-Qahtani was reunited with his family and his surrender will be taken into consideration while looking into his case, Al-Turki said."

The Saudi Interior Ministry spokesman did not indicate when Khaled al-Qahtani gave himself up, but many members of the group's Yemeni wing, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), have recently fled from Yemen, the AP writes.
It wasn't immediately possible to ascertain whether Khaled Al-Qahtani is the brother or relative of Mohammed al-Qahtani, a Saudi-born al Qaeda militant detained at the U.S. military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Mohammed al-Qahtani, now 32, had been picked up in the battle of Tora Bora in Afghanistan from which bin Laden is believed to have escaped.

UPDATE: The two men are not brothers, Gregory Johnson, a Yemen expert with Princeton University, told the Envoy:

"Al-Qahtani is a common Saudi name and there are many individuals in AQAP with that name...They may be related in some other more distant way."

These claims could be answered by the government, why don't they do it to clear it up?
You're gonna need to explain this, it makes little sense.

When do governments release gory photos?

Who in 2011 will believe every photo they see?

Is it worth enraging certain portions?

You called this a 'lie', you're going to need a little more than you have to back that up.

The exposure of the event and its speculation speak for themselves.

Endless questioning is not the proper way to discuss a topic, BVS.

In the wikileaks era it is common for users to see gory photos. Saddams hanging has more hits that Rebecca Black.

Quite frankly I'd rather watch the hanging.

Do you honestly think that if the US was lying about this that al-Qaeda wouldn't offer up proof? They would LOVE to prove the US wrong and make us look full of shit.

There's way too much risk to make this up.

Even Al-Qeada believes it. They confirmed it with their operatives in Pakistan. And admitted it.

I understand the hatred people have for Bin Laden, but what I wish we could prevent is an endless cycle of destruction. There has been times in European history where people have been fighting for 1000 years. Don't even get strated on the Middle East.

I think the fact that you can't answer at least one of the questions speaks for itself.

Sometimes getting someone to question their stance(or at least try and clarify it) IS the way to discuss topics.

I'm still not entirely clear on exactly what facts are at issue for you, but I think I've at least figured out at least one aspect?
When it comes to his semi-known-yet-unknown location, and the Pakistan factor I think them not elaborating on this is a purely diplomatic move. What has become obvious is that there are serious internal issues and divides in Pakistan. If Obama et al start to go into details about this, it could lead to a serious diplomatic incident. It has already been implied that Pakistani intelligence and/or military may have been complacent, and indeed been aware of his presence. I'm sure behind the scenes this issue is being pursued. It's not the kind of conversation you have on tv.
But the fact he was hiding in plain sight? That's often a good strategy. Does it feel ludicrous that it took 10 years to find someone living in a gigantic mansion? Yes. But not implausible by any stretch of the imagination.

I give police and government officals the benefit of the doubt but know they lie.

Some trust is required in life. Going around mistrusting everyone and being negative makes for a shitty world.

You actually also have little to gain from being mistrusting.
