The new Human Development Index was released on December 18, 2008. The data reflects what the situation in 2006, so don't be surprised that Iceland is still on top. The Human Development Index averages per-capita GDP, Education levels, and life expectancy to form the index which attempts to estimate standard of living and rank the countries based on the results.

The United States falls from #12 to #15. Russia and Bosnia dropped from the 60s into the 70s. China dropped from #81 to #94. Ireland remains in the top 5.
