I think the parallels to another famous case are pretty obvious.

We have some major flaws in our gun laws.

And as part of their platform Texas Republicans are trying to make them even more relaxed.
 
Seems a bit overzealous on the clerk's part, to say the least, but the 'mentally ill' angle is a bit irrelevant.

Except that it complicates the clerk's story. In some sources the clerk is said to have "known" the victim and said he was a habitual thief stealing on a daily basis for weeks, whereas others are saying he's been in lock down care until just a few days ago.

This really sounds like we are well on our way to legalized vigilantism.
