This whole idea that a tyranny in the U.S. is going to be taken over by guns is so antiquated.
Every rebellion starts out the same and the rifle in your hands is your primary tool. Please tell me how rain is going to stop falling and creeks will stop flowing because of the governments power. phone and internet ? I can go to an internet cafe and my IP address will instantly change. You apparently haven't done any research on gorilla warfare, know anything about survival, or warfare. I wonder if you know chemical weapons have been against international law since WW1. Tanks can't go in woods, machine guns are just over powered rifles, if an organized rebellion where to form they could probably buy heavy weapons from central america. Also do you realize how effective an IED is ? also how easy it is to make a home made bomb ? Also i like to be independent and able to hold my own. When a hurricane hits and society shuts down, have fun defending your roaring generator with a poo gun. People are going to want to steal your resources for survival. When you call 911 (if your phone has power) the police will not arrive.

Just so we're clear: these kids (and a hundred thousand or so others) are necessary collateral damage so that you can keep paranoid delusion where you're the awesome guy with the gun who stands up against The Robots.

"So this is what it is. Their paranoid fear of a possible dystopic future prevents us from addressing our actual dystopic present. We can’t even begin to address 30,000 gun deaths that are actually, in reality, happening in this country every year because a few of us must remain vigilant against the rise of imaginary Hitler."

30,000 gun deaths do not happen from people with my mind set, it comes from people on drugs, mental problems, in gangs, and etc. Guns don't kill people, people kill people; that is why i'm all for it being tougher to get guns but not make the gun itself illegal.

Your missing my point of view, guns have their many purposes, most people don't see it because they don't own one or used one in a life saving scenario. I'm not going to say they are not abused, but abusive people steal them or somehow obtain them and misuse them. That's why I believe in tougher regulations to receive a gun, but not make the gun itself illegal.

Do you have carrier pigeons too? I mean that's how you plan on contacting Central America for heavy weapons when that satan government knock out your infrastructure right? And do you just look up "heavy weapons" in the yellow pages? Oh, wait you couldn't Google it. Hmmm, and do you plan on paying these Central Americans in goldline coins that you and Glenn Beck have collected in your basement?

We're getting dreadfully off topic here. Bottom line: revolutions have occurred across the globe. They're obviously possible..even with a shortage of carrier pigeons. I don't think there's any need to sit down and discuss the actual minutia of it.

The problem in the US is that they are far too easy to obtain, and our gun culture has allowed that. Are there legitimate reasons? Absolutely. Are there certain weapons that don't have any legitimate place in our civilians hands? Absolutely. Obsessions with 1884 end of the world scenarios is not a reason enough, you're not thinking smart enough if you believe that gun is the answer to that make believe issue. If a government goes rogue in the US in today's world it's going to take 21st century thinking and 22nd century tools.

I don't think anyone here is disagreeing with that. We've all voiced support for tougher background checks.

Well we're actually exactly on topic because this is the premise laid out by so many gun nuts. Just watch Alex Jones' rant on Piers Morgan's show, this is the guy that will be second in command behind Eighties. They have it all figured out.

Do revolutions happen, absolutely. Where do they happen? How developed are those countries? So let's be honest and admit that every scenario requires different thinking and different tools. The US is much different from Libya. An assault rifle here would be like bringing a 3 inch pocket knife to a gun fight. It's just common sense.

So let's bring common sense to this issue. I think almost everyone agrees on reforming background checks. Thank god, finally. Now let's start applying that common sense beyond that. Give me common sense reasons for certain guns and I'll talk to you. But no one has given me any real and common sense reasons for assault weapons.

I don't want to make it too personal, but to me it seems that it does happen from people with your mindset. Because I interpret your comment as an "It's not me, it's you!" mindset. And then it is a 'we' issue. You are not alone. And your guns are not just usable by you.

Yes, people kill people. By using guns.
No-one here is really arguing for making all guns illegal and we all agree here that it should be tougher to get guns. So make those steps. Because all the delaying, dragging, protesting, etc. to even the lightest measures will only result in pressure for more radical changes.

You're right and I think that's a great first step. But the big factor in that is the "gun culture has allowed that". We've allowed certain groups to own our our political process, we've allowed certain groups to glorify this weapon, and we've allowed these groups to make these weapons far too easy to obtain and get in the hands of the wrong people.
