You should watch out with that authoritarian streak.

Just now seeing this, but yes, such "wishes" should be left to the mods.

Why is everyone so bitchy lately?

Don't know if anyone else has been following the Israeli election or not (well, besides sarit and AchtungBono obviously)...

With 99%+ of the results in, leaving a last-minute shift possible but unlikely, it looks like Kadima has unexpectedly received the most votes, but by the thinnest of margins:

Kadima - 28 (seats)
Likud - 27
Yisrael Beiteinu - 15
Labor - 13
Shas - 11
UTJ - 5
Ichud Leumi - 4
Ra'am Ta'al - 4
Hadash - 4
Balad - 3
Meretz - 3
Habayit Hayehudi - 3

As expected, more depressing for the left than for anyone else; nonetheless, these results will probably please no one except Yisrael Beiteinu, an ultranationalist party which racked up heavy gains over the last several weeks at Likud's expense. Even if Livni, as the leader of the party with (apparently) the most votes, now gets the nod from Peres to form the next government, the right-wing bloc now outnumbers the "left" (more like center, if that) in the Knesset by 6-10 seats, and it's not at all clear she'd be able to cobble together a viable coalition. Netanyahu could do that more easily, but a Kadima/Labor-led opposition would likely be strong enough to keep his government's hands tied. A Kadima/Likud unity government would be less vulnerable to paralysis, but would first require either Livni or Netanyahu standing down from the position each now sees as rightfully theirs.

No matter which arrangement results, this election has decisively pushed the government to the right, especially with regard to the Palestinians...Mitchell will have his work cut out for him, and it may no longer be just the Palestinian side which is deeply divided.

That Yisrael Beiteinu won that many votes is both deplorable and frightening.

Hamas says sees Gaza truce deal in next 2-3 days

by Alaa Shahine (Reuters), Feb 12

CAIRO -- Islamist group Hamas said on Thursday it expected an Egyptian-mediated truce with Israel in Gaza to be announced in two or three days. Senior Hamas leader Moussa Abu Marzouq said the truce, which would last for 18 months, would ensure the opening of all commercial crossings between Israel and the Gaza Strip. ...Taher al-Nono, a member of the Islamist group's delegation in Cairo, had earlier told Reuters an agreement was expected within three days. Nono said the agreement would ensure the end of cross-border violence between Palestinian militants in the Hamas-controlled coastal enclave and Israel. "Most of the obstacles that prevented us from reaching an agreement were resolved," Nono said.

Israeli officials had no immediate comment.

Egypt, a regional mediator which has signed a peace deal with Israel, said earlier on Thursday it would announce "positive" results from the talks in the coming hours. The longer-term truce deal would take the place of a shaky January 18 ceasefire, declared separately by both sides, that ended Israel's 22-day military offensive against Hamas Islamists in the Gaza Strip.

...[Marzouq] said the agreement was not linked to any possible prisoner exchange deal with the Jewish state that would see the release of Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier captured by Palestinian militants in a cross-border raid in 2006. "This is a separate issue that has no relation with the truce," he said. "Gilad Shalit will be (released) in exchange for Palestinian captives." A source said linking a deal to exchange prisoners would have "complicated" the talks. Hamas has demanded Israel free 1400 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Shalit. Diplomats said Israel would most probably free closer to 1000.

...Egypt has also invited all Palestinian groups for talks on national reconciliation in Cairo on February 22. Egypt had to postpone similar talks in November when Hamas said it would boycott the event, citing difference with Abbas' Fatah group.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not holding my breath until Israel announces acceptance of this truce though, since all the article really says is that Hamas now feels its concerns have been adequately addressed.

Haven't you read this thread?

I take it you didn't because if you did, would've seen both sides of the issue. You would also see that Israel is not so innocent in this case.

Yes, Israel is the country constantly firing rockets and vowing to drive their enemies into the sea.

The final solution

You think driving out all Palestinians out their homes is the solution?!

Why do you think that way?

Please post where the Palestinians have ever had a country of their own.

Please post a link where this country existed.

Oh my God.

I'm not even going to bother.

Because the Palestinians did not come from out of nowhere. They didn't suddenly just appear. They were living on present day Israeli lands for hundreds of years, until the Israelis drove them out by breaking international laws.

They did have a country of their own. It was part of the Ottoman Empire for centuries. Put the Bible down and read a history book. But likely, you won't due to your bias.

ETA: and even if the Palestinians never had a country of their own, don't you think they deserve one?

Pearl,

You stated your opinion.
You gave me orders to read and what not to read.

Still waiting on you or any member to answer.

Not trying to be rude, but simply trying to get to the truth.

What answer? What answer are you talking about?

I get the impression you only want to hear what you want to hear. Not just in this thread, but all others.

And I didn't give you "orders." I am not ordering you around. I'm simply suggesting you broaden your mind.

The questions:

Please post where the Palestinians have ever had a country of their own.

Please post a link where this country existed.
