seems like liberals ALWAYS try and justify and/or defend another liberal's attack, joke, comment, etc about a rebuplican, no matter what the content.

same as the republicans always do the same against liberals.

if Rush or someone made a joke like that about Michelle Obama, some of you would probably want to crucify him (if you didnt already )

just more partisan BS to me.

and it seems like conservatives always assume that if someone insults a republican, they must be a liberal.

truth is, david letterman is not a liberal, and neither am i, and i started this thread in the first place.

but, alas... i think sarah palin is one of the most underqualified "leaders" any party has put up in a long long time, and i thought letterman is funny, and i'm ok with the gays and the blacks and the jews, so i must be a tree hugging hippy liberal.

and if someone assumes that someone is a liberal because they insulted a republican, then they must be conservative?

who was talking about you? i was talking in general that seems to be the case.

you aren't liberal? then you're conservative? or libertarian like me? :D

dave letterman seems more liberal than conservative, thats for sure.

this is getting really out of hand. he apologized for his joke which, by the way, was not meant to be a political statement, merely a bad joke (one of his many many many bad and unfunny jokes) and palin accepted it. if she thought the matter needed to go further then she shouldn't have accepted it.

but he shouldnt've even had to apologize and she shouldnt even be allowed to be offended!!!

I think it's really lame and tiresome when people keep accusing women of being envious and/or jealous of Sarah Palin because she's such an accomplished woman who has everything.

It's lazy and it's pathetic.

People really do come unhinged beyond anything rational or natural when discussing anything related to her though. Bizarre.

In many of your posts you seem to throw in a really... confusing statement, and this is another one. Are you implying conservatives aren't "ok" with these people?

well considering there are some who are outraged... OUTRAGED i tell you... that apparently david letterman condones the rape and pillage of treelimb palin, yet also defended don imus' "nappy headed ho" comment, i think it's a fair and logical leap to conclude that republicans don't care about black people.

besides, kanye told me so. it must be true.

what... that's not a logical leap? like it's not logical to conclude that david letterman hopes bristol, ct palin gets raped?

oh wait, logic is subjective apparently.

the length of this thread means that Sarah Palin has won this round.

she's succeeded in bumping "John & Kate" from the front page of the tabloids.

she sure is shrewd, and it just might be enough to take her to the white house in 2012!!!

Im jealous of Sarah Palin's husband. :lmao:

Again with the insults and patronization.

It was a tasteless joke by a comedian.

There have been plenty in the past, there will be plenty more in the future.

I think you're wrong.

It was a tasteless joke by a comedian.

No, it was more of a sexist, misogynistic joke-according to NOW and The View: get it right.

:)

There have been plenty in the past, there will be plenty more in the future.

Not quite like this circumstance.

Since you've displayed a tendency towards sexist thought, you would think that.

Because I identified characistics of a female politican?

According to Yolland a 'sexist' is a person wants to limit women:

"could be anything from believing women categorically unfit for any work except homemaking and childrearing, to 'merely' displaying a pervasive tendency to treat women in whichever sphere in a patronizing way, to applying double standards"

But your accusation falls flat because I support women in the work force, married to a career woman, who is more educated than you and I put together, and have no problem with her being the bread-winner. I treat her with respect and love the lady that she is. And that she is liberal and happily married to me a conservative really blows your labeling out of the water.

That said, I could label every female that has trouble with men as "misandrists", but do we want to go down that road? Of course not.

It's only the choice few conservatives who are trying to froth this up into an us vs. them witch hunt. Unless you're saying that the whopping 15 people who showed up to protest Letterman are representing the will of the majority.

I think it's early yet, lets give this 6 months to 9 months to gauge the nation's overall reaction.

Just as a little terminological clarification--literally, a misogynist is someone who hates women, just as a misanthrope is someone who hates humanity in general (and a misandrist someone who hates men in general). While this could certainly entail difficulties relating to women as anything beyond sex objects, the underlying concept really has more to do with generalized, deep-seated feelings of anger and resentment towards women categorically. A sexist, by contrast--at least with reference to women--is simply someone who holds discriminatory views or attitudes towards women, not necessarily consciously... again in whichever sphere (e.g., judging female coworkers who show little flair for fashion 'dumpy' and therefore not professionally up to snuff, while shrugging off the same attribute in male coworkers). What misogyny (or misandry) and sexism, like other discriminatory 'isms,' have in common is essentialism: the tendency to assume all members of a given group possess certain qualities--often negative ones, but they could also be theoretically positive ones which become straitjacketing *when enforced as a behavioral standard*--and to then cite these supposedly inherent qualities (or individuals' failures to conform fully to them) as justifications for unequal treatment of said group or, again, members of it who fail to conform to the traditionally expected stereotype.

But what does
oprah_god.jpg
think? :hmm:

My comment that you quoted above was made before I realized that Spitzer was also included in the joke. Once I realized this, I posted a comment stating that I could see how people might perceive the implication that Palin's daughter was a hooker. That conclusion is not a huge leap for anyone to make, in my opinion.

Except the mention was about avoiding Spitzer, don't hookers want to make money? So that reference doesn't work for me, nor is it one that until yesterday with fguy did I hear anyone else making.

So apparently only fguy got that joke.

this is getting really out of hand. he apologized for his joke which, by the way, was not meant to be a political statement, merely a bad joke (one of his many many many bad and unfunny jokes) and palin accepted it.
That's because there are half a dozen separate sub-discussions roiling in here by this point. Happened with the Imus thread too. :drunk:
jokes, people. jokes. it's his job. it's what he's paid to do.
Well, yeah, and I don't think this should seriously interfere with that. But he works for a corporation that depends heavily on adverti$er$, whose first priority is hardly 'protecting artistic freedom' or whatever lofty b.s., so there's always going to be a certain amount of vulnerability. For someone with Letterman's following, not a lot of it, but it's there, and the mere fact of being a comedian won't make him or anyone else invulnerable. Doesn't really matter whether you or I find all or any of his critics reasonable, only matters if there are enough of them (and there aren't).
But I think the comparison of "I could have easily said..." shows the lack of understand where these "jokes" came from. One was an attack on character and one was an attack on who she was born. If it was a joke about Michelle's character or the way she dressed, etc... he would have had a point.
Character attack is only a credible explanation if you actually believe David Letterman gives two shits whether 17-year-old girls are sexually active, and/or assumes all unmarried young mothers are insatiable sluts. I doubt both of those in the extreme; I think this was just a culturally convenient angle to build a joke around.

There were feminists that used sexist arguments against Palin running like that she couldn't have kids and run at the same time. That's old news.

Maybe you aren't jealous of her but there definately lots that were rubbed the wrong way because of her accomplishments and good looks.

Humans like to do mental projections of their ego and compare them to others. That's where envy comes from. Just look at a MASSIVE example of people and their reaction to the The Beatles at 4:24 and 6:27:

YouTube - The Beatles- Revolution Part 6

Humans at their base nature are stupid envious animals. We raise up stars and their ego (self-image) and want to destroy them afterward. Even Bono illustrated that in HMTMKMKM. Celebrity is a two edged sword.

I think narcissism and envy are EVERYWHERE. Just look at Hollywood and journalism in general. Most of it is about raising them up and bringing them down.

She's hot:

She's a loser in an election and people are STILL making jokes about her. She got defensive about her kids and probably the best thing was to ignore David Letterman but if I was in her situation I could see being fed up and would like to send a shit-storm his way for revenge.

i await the full-throated, outraged, denunciations from diamond of THIS particular senator:

Sen. Ensign Acknowledges an Extramarital Affair

By Paul Kane and Chris Cillizza
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Sen. John Ensign (Nev.), considered a rising star in the Republican Party, yesterday acknowledged an extramarital affair with a former campaign staffer who is married to one of the lawmaker's former legislative aides.

Ensign, a member of the Senate Republican leadership, disclosed the affair at a hastily arranged news briefing in Las Vegas, his home town. He flew home yesterday morning after informing GOP leaders on Capitol Hill of his impending announcement, missing a vote on tourism legislation considered important to Nevada's casino industry.

The news was the latest setback for a party that suffered losses of at least 13 Senate seats in the past two elections and saw Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) defect to the Democrats in April. Any further instability in their ranks is unwelcome news for Republicans, who viewed Ensign as a telegenic communicator who could deliver the conservative message on political talk shows in a congenial matter.

Ensign did not directly comment about his political future but said he was "committed to my service in the United States Senate." He does not face reelection until 2012 and had taken preliminary steps to explore a run for the White House that year, making a trip three weeks ago to Iowa, the first testing ground on the presidential primary calendar.

"I deeply regret and am very sorry for my actions," Ensign said, reading from a prepared statement and leaving without taking questions. Ensign's wife, Darlene, was not at her husband's side during the short briefing but issued a statement saying the couple's marriage has become "stronger" after the affair.

"I love my husband," she said in her statement.

let us note: Sen. Ensign (R-NV) has been a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, supported a constiutional amendment banning it, and called on President Clinton to resign over the Lewinsky affair. he also called for Sen. Craig's resignation after his incident in the airport restroom.

go get 'em, diamond!

I agree, except for one thing. Letterman is JUST a comedian, and unfortunately Rush is considered much more, he's considered a source of information by some.

I agree, but according to them it would be a character attack. My whole point was choice vs not choice.

Maybe you aren't jealous of her but there definately lots that were rubbed the wrong way because of her accomplishments and good looks.
This just isn't true. You, Rush, 2861 fall for this mentality hook, line, and sinker. It's a middle school argument, you've been using it since day one in here.
