I'm glad Roman Polanski finally got caught!

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
First, Dance Of The Vampires is one of my favorite movies which I watch every winter.

Second, can't we just put Polanski and Manson in a Saw type situation, film it, give the proceeds to all the victims, and let the survivor walk. That way at least one of these assholes gets tortured/executed making the conservative in me happy.

At this point, I'm starting to think you're a troll with a specific intention of discrediting conservatives.

Right, but diamond certainly wasn't just honing in on one person with his ridiculous "defending Polanski" statement.

Sure I was -before you assumed differently.
Also, for those that sympathize w Polanski in this forum and out of this forum in the entertainment industry.

...or have a sense of humor about stereotypes, including ones pinned on me.

Let me be the neo-con, theocratic right-winger and I'll let you be the fiscal, conspiracy de jour conservative and maybe we can find a way to agree from time to time.

No idea, and I'm glad that's not my job to decide. Definitely don't think that should be a reason for him not to be extradited (not that I think you're implying that, LMP).

Would there be an additional sentence for fleeing the country on top of for the rape sentence?

Yeah, I wasn't implying that. He should serve some sort of term, whether it be a short jail stint or a period of house arrest, but who knows? Like you said, we're not deciding.

That's a good question.

Not necessarily, try this scenario:

If Polanski had been interrupted and been caught with new nude photographs of the victim only and never raped her, because he was interrupted, I do believe some here would claim the photos would be "art" only.

that's absolute bull ... oh, wait, i forgot. you're a conservative. you need to create enemies and imaginary scenarios in order to even begin to construct an argument.

And, child pornography is not art.

Joseph Smith would disagree.

Deal! :hmm:

so, that's where my discomfort with some of the anger surrounding this event comes from. it's been politicized by many on the right as an even that "proves" the moral depravity of Hollywood/France/artists.

I'm certainly not one on the right but I'm rather appalled at everyone in H-wood who signed that petition. Have you actually read the language of the petition? I can only assume that it was penned by extremely dimwitted people, to the point where everyone whose name is on there should be ashamed of themselves, through and through, for associating with something that is just so fucking STUPID. Could they not hire a lawyer to at least draft something that doesn't make anyone with 2 brain cells who reads it laugh about 6 separate times?

They have come across as nothing short of morons in this instance.

And also, I have to say that I'm disturbed by the elements present in European media who have used this as an example of American puritanical nature. Baffling.

Frankly, I have had no more than a passing interest in this matter, and I have to say that I'm seriously  at a lot of what has been said by what I would otherwise think are reasonable people.

Agreed.

And the guy should have served time long ago. It's not a left/right issue.

I agree. Taking multiple teenage wives is pretty twisted.

On the surface some may think that, but if it was an ancient principle that a Prophet was commanded to re institute by God, for a period of time only- then the argument should be over.

Any attempt to further the argument would be an obfuscation and an attempt to divert the discussion in a different direction.

As non-Mormon church historian Ernst Benz wrote:
Mormon polygamy has nothing to do with sexual debauchery but is tied to a strict patriarchal system of family order and demonstrates in the relationship of the husband to his individual wives all the ethical traits of a Christian, monogamous marriage. It is completely focused on bearing children and rearing them in the bosom of the family and the Mormon community. Actually, it exhibits a very great measure of selflessness, a willingness to sacrifice, and a sense of duty

And to extrapolate and compare a drug induced under aged vaginal and anal rape of a teenage girl to anciently restored Biblical precepts would be disingenuous.

Joseph Smith's polygamous marriages to young women may seem difficult to understand or explain today, but in his own time such age differences were not typically an obstacle to marriage. The plural marriages were unusual, to say the least; the younger ages of the brides were much less so. Critics do not provide this perspective because they wish to shock the audience and have them judge Joseph by the standards of the modern era, rather than his own time.

I trust you're after the truth, and the thread would be better suited if we stayed on topic.

i see. so all of Joseph Smith's dozens and dozens of brides were all 18 or older?

likewise, anal rape is worse than vaginal rape?

The majority of them were yes, and rape is rape.
Joseph didn't rape anyone, but why the digression on your part?

Perhaps slightly, but it was all in jest, my good man. More to the point then, if God says its okay to have underage wives, then its okay?

Or is it the law of averages that makes it alright?

All this has nothing to do with Roman Polanski, however I will answer your questions in that they seem somewhat sincere.

At that day and age, for the right reasons -yes.

We know that women married before they were 18 yrs of age much more frequently in the 1800s than they do today. Back then it was culturally acceptable 150 years ago -more so then it is today. People lived shorter life spans 150 years ago, perhaps thats why they married younger.

I do not think the age of consent was exactly 18 back then-could have been younger, or w parental consent etc.

Also I would refer you to this:

We do know through societal changes and further revelation that polygamy was banned over 100 yrs ago in the LDS Church, and that the LDS Church honors and respects the laws of the land encouraging marriages at legal ages only.
