The House will pass it after taxes go up. That way they can claim they lowered taxes.

The GOP may potentially be able to extract a lot in the way of spending cuts with the impending fight over the debt ceiling.

House Speaker John Boehner couldn’t hold back when he spotted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the White House lobby last Friday.

It was only a few days before the nation would go over the fiscal cliff, no bipartisan agreement was in sight, and Reid had just publicly accused Boehner of running a “dictatorship” in the House and caring more about holding onto his gavel than striking a deal.

“Go fuck yourself,” Boehner sniped as he pointed his finger at Reid, according to multiple sources present.

Reid, a bit startled, replied: “What are you talking about?”

Boehner repeated: “Go fuck yourself.”

The harsh exchange just a few steps from the Oval Office — which Boehner later bragged about to fellow Republicans — was only one episode in nearly two months of high-stakes negotiations laced with distrust, miscommunication, false starts and yelling matches as Washington struggled to ward off $500 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts.

I also think Obama is going to want to get rid of some deductions as well.

That's going to be the next big fight. Spending cuts are a given, only a question of how much $$ we're talking about. The big fight is going to be if the Republicans will give ANY more revenue. Because Obama keeps saying it has to be "balanced". He's going to nail them again on revenues.

Krauthammer was talking about this last night.
He basically said that Obama, more or less, had their balls in a vice.

Personally, I don't think the current deal was horrible unless it's the only thing we do. As a stand-alone bill it doesn't do much. But as a first step in a 2, 3, or 4 step process, it's not horrible. I fear that Republicans believe revenues are off the table. And I fear just getting 'beaten' by the President is going to cause them to fight even harder against him.

Late February is going to be ugly.

My thoughts pretty much exactly.

Unfortunately, I think you're right about this. I LOVE the idea of him getting tougher on the Republicans and everything, I think that's great. But the GOP just flat out has no respect for him. So whether they get what they want or not, they're going to keep acting like the whiny babies that they are (hi, Boehner! Classy comment to Reid there!).

Ergh. This'll be VERY interesting/chaotic.

To be honest, I think the only thing that can be learned from this affair is that - if anyone was still in doubt - the US is politically bankrupt.
A 7 year old who has sat through a 15 minute introduction on balancing a budget can understand the dire financial situation the US is in.

To still have this turned into a Democrats vs. Republicans issue is abject.
To postpone any true commitment to solve the problem another 2 months staggers believe.

Putting December 31 as a date on the "fiscal cliff issue" always befuddled me, but not being any closer now to any sort of solution than at the start of 2012 would make you believe even the EU has a more hands-on approach to problem solving than the US.
