Ooh ooh! I just had to talk about this on a final exam today . Well, indecency is "depiction or discussion of sexually/excretory acts/organs in a patently offensive way" and it's only regulated on broadcast networks/radio as it is, and the idea is brought in a case by case basis, focusing on whether the idea of the indecent act was TRYING to pander to the audience, dwell on the subject matter, and repeat it. Honestly, I personally don't see ED ads doing that, but, it's going to end up being up to the FCC to determine whether it does. As it is, the ads CAN be shown from 10 PM to 6 AM, like the article says.

Anyways, to me, ED ads don't really fall under any of those specifications.

Which one has the sex music, is it Cialis? You know, "wow chicka wow wow" haha.

As a father I'd rather not see the various ED drug ads. It's not a huge deal, but I noticed it last fall watching the baseball playoffs, it was literally between every inning. My daughter is 7 and I was waiting for the question...closest we got was her giggling that "ooooh they're gonna go do it" and then she was on to something else.

To be honest I'm surprised this hasn't come up sooner. The ED ads IMO are worse than the BK "square butts" spot that everybody got in a twist over.

Whatever happened to condom ads? I distinctly remember Trojan and Lifestyles having TV spots, but I haven't seen one in forever. Did the FCC kill them or have Trojan etc. just decided to stop TV advertising.

AIDS stopped scaring the shit out of young, straight, white guys so there was no need to keep advertising condoms.

Really not germane at all to the point of the thread deep- but I know you enjoy it all the same. As I'm sure you're aware, I was talking about parents and kids.

Another not-so-surprising dig

Not so long ago, some folks thought it was indecent to advertise, women's products. Such as tampons.

True. But that's just stupid, like being offended by toilet paper ads because you use it on your butt (shh, don't say butt, it's naughty).

personally, i have no problem with them showing ads for ed. what i do have a problem with is pharmaceutical ads in general. in the us at least, so many are shown for various problems. it's not unusual to see two or three ads for prescription pills during one commercial break. but all these commercials do is plant the seed in your head, you start to think "gee maybe i am depressed" or "i laughed too hard that one time and peed myself a little, maybe i do need to calm down that 'i gotta go feeling'?" and any negative side effects are downplayed by showing happy people (presumably those who take the medication) and why, look! they don't have cancer, headache, or trouble standing! so i'll be fine.

i of course understand the reason why these ads are shown and in such great frequency, but it infuriates me that there's not stricter regulations in place to prevent these kind of feel good ads. honestly, it's always baffled me why america as a whole focuses more on treating illnesses rather than preventing them. as anna said earlier in the thread, more money is spent in australia on ads for ed pills than prostate cancer research. again, i understand why this is so, but that doesn't mean i agree with it or don't think some massive overhaul of the pharmaceutical companies isn't needed.

In the Cialis spots, I'm always amused that the man and the woman are sitting in separate tubs. If you've just had a good shagging, wouldn't you share the same tub? Of course, I'd also get a bigger tub.

I think the ED spots are dopey. The disclaimers are the best, though.

"If you've got an erection lasting more than 4 hours..."

... call another hooker.

I don't think it would be so bad to restrict these spots. Maybe only run them from 9pm to 5am.

you know, from an advertisers perspective new zealand has an incredibly loose set of advertising laws - there is just so much you can get away with.

yet compared to america, the ads for dick pills are so much less disturbing. we see cuddling old couples, and that's it. plus we have got standards for other drug ads. i've seen the american ones, it's actually quite scary what they can say...new zealand the only stuff advertised are herbal remedies, which themselves are getting scrutinised.

i know you guys don't like the government interfering, but at some point standards need to be maintained.

now excuse me while i watch semi-naked women advertise an energy drink at 5pm.
