"Well, the turtles may take a hit for a while, but so what? So do we!" Limbaugh said. "Just give it a pain pill! Why not? That's what they had for us, and we don't even launch ourselves into the windshields of fire trucks."

Don't be so quick to judge.

I don't believe this is Rush talking

it is the oxycontin.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is withdrawing his support of a plan to expand oil drilling off the California coast, citing the environmental tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico.

Speaking during a news conference Monday, Mr. Schwarzenegger said television images of the oil spill in the Gulf have changed his mind about the safety of ocean-based oil platforms.

The Republican governor had proposed expanding oil drilling off the coast of Santa Barbara to help close the state's $20-billion (U.S.) budget deficit, so withdrawing his support essentially kills the idea since he would have to include it in his May budget revision.

Crist did the same thing in FL

I don't think we will see any uptick in off-shore drilling for a decade or two.

I am surprised there is not more speculation about how this exposion/ fire / platform sinking came to happen in the first place.

I'll give it 3 years--about the time people mostly have forgotten about the platform leak and they are sick of paying $5-$6 plus per gallon. The farther away from the coasts, the shorter the memories will be.

This one is not over yet

it is going to get a lot, lot, worse

this will be a top news story for months with plenty of pictures
and it very well may put a good hit on the economy

I agree it's going to get worse, and that the economy will take some sort of it from it. But, come the next athlete that screws around or person who goes missing from a cruise ship, unfortunately, most of the U.S. will start to be distracted.

Limbaugh suggests oil rig explosion an inside job; says cleanup unnecessary

Welcome to a special edition of New Orleans in the News blog focused on the oil spill and the recovery efforts, and what others in the world are saying about the catastrophe. Earlier this week the LA Times released a controversial story saying New Orleanians are "shrugging" at the oil spill, but now radio host Rush Limbaugh has jumped into the foray with comments that are sure to spark some debate.

First, Limbaugh on Thursday alluded to the oil rig explosion being an inside job:

"I want to get back to the timing of the blowing up, the explosion out there in the Gulf of Mexico of this oil rig. Since they're sending SWAT teams down there now this changes the whole perspective of this. Now, lest we forget, ladies and gentlemen, the carbon tax bill, cap and trade that was scheduled to be announced on Earth Day. I remember that. And then it was postponed for a couple of days later after Earth Day, and then of course immigration has now moved in front of it.

But this bill, the cap-and-trade bill, was strongly criticized by hardcore environmentalist wackos because it supposedly allowed more offshore drilling and nuclear plants, nuclear plant investment. So, since they're sending SWAT teams down there, folks, since they're sending SWAT teams to inspect the other rigs, what better way to head off more oil drilling, nuclear plants, than by blowing up a rig? I'm just noting the timing here."

"You do survive these things. I'm not advocating don't care about it hitting the shore or coast and whatever you can do to keep it out of there is fine and dandy, but the ocean will take care of this on its own if it was left alone and was left out there," Limbaugh said. "It's natural. It's as natural as the ocean water is.

"Well, the turtles may take a hit for a while, but so what? So do we!" Limbaugh said. "Just give it a pain pill! Why not? That's what they had for us, and we don't even launch ourselves into the windshields of fire trucks."

Limbaugh followed up those comments on Friday by saying this is "Obama's Katrina." To be fair, he's said this before during last year's swine flu craze.
I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Rush Limbaugh, die in a fire.

It's really not as bad as the media says..maybe we could just get a bunch of people to drink it with big giant straws

Rep. Gene Taylor (D-Miss.) suggested over the weekend that people shouldn't be "scared" about the Gulf Coast oil spill and in justifying his claim compared the massive slick to "chocolate milk."

On Saturday, Taylor flew over the oil spill in a Coast Guard plane and at first glance declared that the site was "not as bad" as he expected it to be.

The Sun Herald reports:

Taylor flew over the site of the sunken Deepwater Horizon rig Saturday along with Department of Marine Resources Director Bill Walker and Rep. Jo Bonner of Alabama. [...]

"At the moment, it's not as bad as I thought it would be," he said, shortly after returning from the three-hour tour.

After observing the oil spill from 1,000 feet, Taylor said in an interview with Biloxi's WLOX-TV that what many feel is an environmental and economic catastrophe is not "Katrina" or "Armageddon," adding that the "chocolate milk looking spill" is beginning to "break up naturally":

What I want people to know is this isn't Katrina. This is not Armageddon. I did this for the Coast Guard many years ago. Yeah, it's bad. And it's terrible that there's a spill out there. But I would remind people that the oil is twenty miles from any marsh. [...]

That chocolate milk looking spill starts breaking up in smaller pieces... It is tending to break up naturally.

All of this despite the fact that the spill has tripled in size over the past few days.

Heckuva job Brownie gets himself in the news. I thought President Obama recently mentioned some sort of support of off shore drilling, it's in the Obama thread.

Michael Brown: Obama Wanted Oil Spill (VIDEO)

Bush-era FEMA head Michael Brown accused President Obama Monday of "playing politics" with the Gulf Coast oil spill, claiming that Obama waited for the spill to worsen in order to turn public opinion against offshore drilling.

Brown, most infamous for his response to Hurricane Katrina, told Neil Cavuto that Obama and his administration are thrilled by the current disaster in the Gulf. "This is exactly what they want, because now he can pander to the environmentalists and say, 'I'm gonna shut it down because it's too dangerous,'" Brown said. "This president has never supported big oil, he's never supported offshore drilling, and now he has an excuse to shut it back down."

there's been reports that North Korea torpedoed the oil platform and Obama has ordered a "total backout" of this.

probably bullshit, but you never know, it was a South Korean company that made the rig.....

Only FOX News could present Brownie as some sort of expert with a straight face. Pretty soon they're going to put The Onion out of business.

my boss came into the office toting this crackpot theory and the little old lady supervisor shivered in fear, taking it for complete truth

and when i say boss i mean a republican television blowhard
and when i say little old lady, i mean the teapartiers

but the former part really did happen.

I was confused but now I see, it's blackout

I think some people could find an Obama conspiracy even in a pile of horse crap. If they stared at it long enough..or something.

I can just see those Obama oil spill e-mails flying

Another disaster and another incompetant Administration dealing with it, what the bigger question is if this country could survive 12 to 16 years of a leadership vacuum. We as a country should really look at how we are choosing our leaders and better ways to put the best and brightest in power although I think these people would never run fo any public office any way.

As a side note I live on the west coast of FL, some of the best, most prestine beaches are within a bike ride from my house, we are all hoping this disaster stays off of our shores but local officials are already preparing for the worst.

A dead pelican is seen on Chandeleur Island, Louisiana on May 3. The state bird of Louisiana, the brown pelican, was just removed from the endangered species list last year. Depending on how it fares, it could come to symbolize the affects of the damage done by the oil spill. Their nesting season, which has just begun, lies in the direct path of the spill.

They must have died from natural causes. After all, oil is organic.

The government should just hire all the unemployed recent college graduates to clean up the mess and then send the invoice to BP. Easy peasy, japanesey.

Dear Fox "News":

YOU'RE NOT HELPING.

Dear Fox News,

Take a few minutes off and go f:censored:k yourselves! And after your done get Rush oiled up and give it to him. What is kinda scary is that there are Americans who beLIEve what is said on Faux News, very sad and speaks volumes to the overall intelligence of the public.

Republican porn!

The news coverage of this is really frustrating. Does anyone know exactly where the oil slicks have hit land? All I can find are sensationalized pictures and political banter.

As for the dead animals, I keep coming across these pics but they all say "cause of death undetermined". Not trying to undermine the possibly catastrophic consequences here but I've walked these beaches every year and see dead birds, fish, dolphins, rays, sharks, etc. You all know I love animals and my life revolves around dogs but it's kind of disturbing to see more coverage about a few dead fish than the people that died because of this.
