It doesn't matter.
It's not about a birth certificate. The birth certificate is just a McGuffin. The people who are seriously asking to see the real birth certificate wouldn't accept its existence if it was rubbed into their noses.
You know, when Obama was leading the polls back in 2008 there was a big question mark about one thing, "Would whites, once they went into that voting booth, still pull the lever for a black guy?" It wasn't a question of racism, because racism is something active. It was about something below the surface. It was the tune of the Clinton campaign (those two slimy fucks). Not racism, but "otherness". "He's not one of us".
It's not quite racism, but it's the amalgamation of all the fears we collectively possess as a country. All the leftover fears and paranoia about Communism have been repackaged and resold in a more consumer-friendly format as fear of Socialism. We fear brown people but are happy to take their money and buy their oil. We fear that by 2050, the minorities will be the majority. It's not racism, but it is something sinister, below the surface, and it manifests itself in the Tea Party.
And all of this anxiety, fear, and not-quite racism, is packaged up and directed at Obama.

I was just coming in here to say the same thing. I guarantee no one cares whether or not Obama was born here or in Kenya. It doesn't matter. Being born somewhere doesn't make you who you are. The only reason that rule is in place is because we were once afraid of being usurped by a foreign power (read: ENGLAND) and being made a colony again. It's not going to happen. Do away with it.
The real reason behind it is because people just can't swallow the fact that a pale white guy is not sitting in the marble white pale house. I mean, 200 years ago, Obama would have been picking cotton. Some people can't handle that. Some people have a 200 year old mentality.
When Obama got elected people were saying welcome to post-racial America. What a crock of bullshit, topped with whipped horseshit. And a dung beetle for a cherry on top.
I am very embarrassed today. Extremely embarrassed that he had to show it and embarrassed that he did show it. This is not what we should be focused on. It is catastrophic, honestly. We are witnessing the political system unravel slowly and no one fucking cares.

That was Donald Trump’s pithy response last December to Fox News personality Brian Kilmeade’s question regarding Trump’s position on whether or not to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for people earning more than $200,000 a year.
During last year’s debate over the tax cuts, the potential 2012 presidential candidate was outspoken in his opposition to President Barack Obama’s effort to deny an extension.
“He’s taking away a lot of incentives from a lot of people that produce a lot of taxes,” Trump told Fox News, explaining that Obama’s proposal would drive the wealthy out of the country. “It creates the wrong image. You really have to keep the taxes down.”
Ten years earlier, when Trump was also floating a run for the White House, he was singing a different tune.
The first proposal unveiled by his exploratory presidential campaign in 2000 was to impose a one-time 14.25 percent tax on the assets of people and trusts worth $10 million or more -- raising $5.7 trillion to help balance the deficit in one year and ensure the stability of the Social Security Trust Fund for decades to come.
In his book “The America That We Deserve” and in numerous interviews, he touted the proposal. He told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on November 18, 1999:
"I would tax people of wealth -- of great wealth, people over $10 million, by 14.25 percent. This tax would raise approximately $5.7 trillion, which happens to be our national debt. We would now save $200 billion a year in interest costs, which would go toward lowering taxes for everybody and particularly the working middle class; getting rid of the estate tax and saving Social Security. The economy would boom. We'd have no debt. Hey, I know about debt probably as much as anybody. I've had too much, and I've had too little. And you know what? Too little is much better, believe me."
Conservative critics attacked the plan, using arguments similar to those made by Trump today to deride Obama’s proposal. Pat Buchanan, who was then Trump’s main opponent for the Reform Party nomination, said the tax proposal would prompt the wealthy to move their money out of the U.S. “I can’t think of a better idea to cause capital flight out of the United States,” Buchanan told the New York Times.

Fifty percent of Americans, including 31% of Republicans, say Trump would make a “poor” or “terrible” president.
Trump is filling a huge void in the Republican Party right now, and he’s gathering a protest vote: protest against the way Washington works; protest with the establishment Republicans,” says Scott Reed, manager for Bob Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign. “The jury is still out whether Trump can translate that into a real candidacy for president.”
His possible bid faces broad resistance: 63% of Americans, including 46% of Republicans, say they definitely will not vote for Trump for president. In comparison, 46% of Americans say they definitely will not vote for President Obama — significantly lower but itself a hurdle to winning the 2012 election.
Though Trump initially got attention by expressing doubts whether Obama was born in the USA, that issue is not driving his support. Among those who say they definitely or might vote for Trump, only about a third question whether the president was born in the USA.
Support from the “birthers” is stronger for Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney. The issue has persisted even though Hawaii has released an official Certificate of Live Birth showing Obama was born there, a fact confirmed in non-partisan investigations by FactCheck.org and others.
Still, in the USA TODAY poll, only 38% of Americans say Obama definitely was born in the USA, and 18% say he probably was. Fifteen percent say he probably was born in another country, and 9% say he definitely was born elsewhere.
Republicans are inclined to say the president was born abroad by 43%-35%.

exactly. i didn't want him to show it, it's no one's business. the more i hear about trump (like the suits made in china thing kramer vs. kramer mentioned, as well as wanting his precious tax cuts extended) the more i realise he's a huge hypocrite. the only people who should want him as president are that top 1%, the fact that only 63% say they wouldn't vote for him is sad. give it up, remaining 36%, you are NOT filthy rich and trump will NOT have your best interests at heart.

I think Trump is a buffoon and a blowhard, and I think the birthers are a bunch of loons. At the same time, I can't agree that the nationality of someone running for (or holding the office of) President of the United States is no one's business. However, this "issue" had been settled by the President long ago. It's frustrating and aggravating that this became a huge distraction.
But, in the words of an Op-Ed piece from the Business Insider, perhaps the President just pulled a brilliant political move before our eyes. "Obama didn't end the craziness. He elevated the crazies. Bravo."

Did anybody see Lawrence O'Donnell tonight on MSNBC? I couldn't find any video yet, but try and catch the re-run tonight. He gave NBC a smack down for even associating with this clown (DT) and even asked them to fire him. The first 20 minutes are just him looking dead pan in to the camera pleading with the network. It was brilliant. He also had the lunatic Orly Taitz on at the end wanting to give her a chance to do a mea culpa since she is the mother of all birthers. He had to throw her off the show! It was classic!
