it has actually made my day that he is refusing to resign! he is finally showing a little bit of character - i love that he is a man of the people, and i don't think "charisma" is always a good trait for a politician - so am feeling a tiny bit hopeful right now...

in my ideal world - my plan for Britain (i've been thinking about this alllll day) would be: parliament will vote not to trigger the exit clause, the Tory government will be exposed and discredited for getting us into this mess in the first place, Labour will be unified under Jeremy Corbyn with mass backing of the people, and will go on to win the general elections to address the disconnect between national govt and the people (i.e., Labour will reclaim its traditional voters who have now veered to the far right for want of someone to hear them), and take steps to resolve the concerns of the whole swathes of the population who feel ignored (and for those reasons voted Brexit), and turn their anger into optimism that a new fair solution is possible, in the hope that we can achieve a fairer society and overcome divisions on so many levels

i think i must be on drugs or something

if anyone on Facebook wants to see what's happening right now in Britain - escalation of hate crime, racism and anti-LGBT abuse in the days since the referendum - there is a new group which is logging reports as they occur - really upsetting - Brexit has legitimized xenophobia and hatred

(sharing here as not sure how well it's being reported internationally)

So voters should be required to take a current events test in order to vote?

Is it that offensive a thought?

People are sick and tired of the condescending political class telling them to take their medicine of what's good for them. The political class class has lost touch with the people they represent. Happening in the UK and the USA. You may think it's revenge of the country bumpkins, but 17 million people have spoken in a fair election in which both sides presented their cases and engaged in hyperbole on the ramifications.

I think you're overestimating the common voter's rationale. Most of them don't have one.

Calling it a bloodless rebellion might be offensive to Jo Cox's family, yes.

No, but this is why direct democracy doesn't work. Can you imagine if we did direct votes on something like climate change or gun control? People would vote with emotion or blind party affiliation; it gets nothing accomplished.

If you feel that the people you are voting for have lost touch with you, then put someone in there that does speak for you BUT what if it's you that's lost touch with reality? What if it's you?

And as far as the US; if you're sick and tired of the condescending political class, then why the hell are you trying to place a condescending asshole that operates even above the "political class"? That makes no sense to anyone, to the rest of the world it looks like you all have lost touch with reality. Which is the same exact thing with this referendum, fear and misguided anger won over logic and reason.

If you're angry, be angry, but know the reasonable response. We all understand the frustrations and the "movements" that are happening right now, but the problem is these are not the right responses or the right people for the job. Platitudes, scapegoats, they've done these populous movements well, but they have no answers. When a real revolution happens you'll know it; Sanders, Trump, Brexit... these are not real.

I can imagine this thread in 1776 being a Loyalist hotbed. These damn Continental Congressman are a bunch of backwards uneducated rubes preying on the colonies' lowest common denominators. Don't they know King George has a mandate from God and is only looking out for their best interests. It's time they start paying more than their fair share to the crown. How dare they aspire to have free will?

Well I'm sorry if Jo Cox has relatives on FYM. In the course of human history it is not a widespread violent rebellion (let me phrase it that way).

This is your biggest problem. This isn't anywhere near the same thing, no where even close. Like I said, at some point everyone has to look in the mirror and ask if they are the one that's lost touch with reality.
