I think it's better to go there and have the athletes actively protest while they are there. Standing on the medal podium, carrying signs or whatever.

Boycotting the Olympics will just allow Russia to not deal with it at all. What needs to happen is undeniable EMBARRASSMENT to Russia. That creates a political pressure even Putin won't be able to ignore. If nobody shows up (but especially Americans), then he (and the Russian people) can EASILY ignore it.

At least that's how I currently see it.

Does anyone else see the irony in any of this? For years, the worst thing a Republican could say was "Why don't you go to Russia?" Every liberal heard that at least once in their lifetime.

Now, the Russians are doing something a lot of Republicans would like to do. It's just too ironic.

I'd like to see every single American athlete wear the rainbow stripes on their clothing on the field and push this all the way. If Russia wants to arrest them all, fill the jails.

But, damn, doesn't the potential for a seriously bad situation seem very likely now?

at the time, that perhaps was not their best move,

of course we can all look back at it now and say that makes a cool poster for my wall

Something can and should be done, in a measured way.
There is a chance to ruin every future Olympics, think what could have happened to the Chinese Olympics if politics over ran them.

but now, it was pretty cool, no? especially with the Aussie also wearing the human rights badge?

i wasn't around in 1968, and i'm sure it upset conservative white folks a great deal, but isn't that the point and shouldn't we be seeking to upset people like Vitaly Milonov and Vladimir Putin?

This made people shit their pants for 30+ years. It would be great to see it happen again.

Really sad may have been an overstatement, but it's still unfortunate.

My hope is that Russia, being the host nation, wins a lot of gold medals.

Let's say 50. And then when Putin is celebrating, 5 of the winner's can announce they are gay.

I'd think there would be an opportunity to get the Russian people on the right side of things. If Putin doesn't want to be overthrown, maybe he buckles. Then again, if he digs his heels in, or has enough support, maybe it's like Iran and nothing happens. Or maybe it's worse like Syria. Or maybe it's closer to Egypt.

So to answer your question - yeah.

That said, the Olympics is a good platform for peaceful protest.

Oh, and as a child of the 80's...FUCK RUSSIA.
Except for Maria Sharapova that is. Although she's pretty American by now.
