President-elect Barack Obama has yet to attend church services since winning the White House earlier this month, a departure from the example of his two immediate predecessors.

On the three Sundays since his election, Obama has instead used his free time to get in workouts at a Chicago gym.
He's so much like me!!!

Ha! I read somewhere that he and his family haven't really attended church regularly for quite a few years now. Heathens unite!

That would make his dreary faith based babble rather dishonest, change indeed.

Only if you think that sitting your ass in a wooden pew on Sunday morning = faith.

Q: You've talked about your experience walking down the aisle at Trinity United Church of Christ, and kneeling beneath the cross, having your sins redeemed, and submitting to God's will. Would you describe that as a conversion? Do you consider yourself born again?

A: I am a Christian, and I am a devout Christian. I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that that faith gives me a path to be cleansed of sin and have eternal life. But most importantly, I believe in the example that Jesus set by feeding the hungry and healing the sick and always prioritizing the least of these over the powerful. I didn't 'fall out in church' as they say, but there was a very strong awakening in me of the importance of these issues in my life. I didn't want to walk alone on this journey. Accepting Jesus Christ in my life has been a powerful guide for my conduct and my values and my ideals.

There is one thing that I want to mention that I think is important. Part of what we've been seeing during the course this campaign is some scurrilous e-mails that have been sent out, denying my faith, talking about me being a Muslim, suggesting that I got sworn in the U.S. Senate with a Quran in my hand or that I don't pledge allegiance to the flag. I think it's really important for your readers to know that I have been a member of the same church for almost 20 years, and I have never practiced Islam. I am respectful of the religion, but it's not my own. One of the things that's very important in this day and age is that we don't use religion as a political tool and certainly that we don't lie about religion as a way to score political points. I just thought it was important to get that in there to dispel rumors that have been over the Internet. We've done so repeatedly, but obviously it's a political tactic of somebody to try to provide this misinformation.
Q&A: Barack Obama | Christianity Today | A Magazine of Evangelical Conviction

I think that an atheist or agnostic who tries to give that impression to get votes is being dishonest, justifiably perhaps but dishonest nonetheless.

Exactly. If you read Dreams From My Father, an ongoing thread throughout the book examines how he arrived at his faith. His was a more lengthy, thoughtful process than it is for many people, I'm sure. I obviously don't agree with his conclusion, but I can respect that he values the community aspect of his faith, and that he doesn't wear his religion on his sleeve.

I'm not sure what that contributes to your point. He says he's been a member of the church for 20 years. So? My mother is very devout and has belonged to the same Church for decades and maybe attends 10 times per year. He also says he wasn't always on the same path - in fact if you read his book he basically says that he never attended church until he became a community organizer in Chicago and then started attending it for pragmatic reasons - basically to make him a better organizer. In the process he said that he had a spiritual awakening. Never said he sat in there on a weekly basis.

There's nothing contradictory within that statement. I know many people who are members of churches, but attend only sporadically. Their faith is still very important to them.

It isn't a question of him attending church, I just don't think he actually believes in a physical resurrection or submission to God and that wouldn't be a bad thing.

well, in response to posting that he hadn't attended, you said:

so perhaps you can see how that can only really come across one way.
