There's a murder trial in Philadelphia going on that
for the most part is being ignored by the
media. It's not being seen on the front pages or
being covered by news programs.

It concerns a doctor who performed late term-abortions.

Whatever your view on when life begins or abortion,
I think many of us can agree that things like this are not right.

Warning:The following article is very descriptive.

Anderson Cooper covered it on AC360 last night at the top of his show. He did a good job, covering all angles of this - abortion, race, and the solid fact that the health departments and all those who were supposed to investigate Gosnell did not do their jobs at all.

This is a really good piece on how important this issue is:
Why Dr. Kermit Gosnell's Trial Should Be a Front-Page Story - Conor Friedersdorf - The Atlantic

There is so much wrong with this story and it is sickening that what happened in Gosnell's went on for many years and no one bothered to pay attention to the complaints or suspicious activities. A woman died, and it was never investigated how exactly she died. Amazing how neglectful authorities are.

One thing for sure, Gosnell is a sick sadist. Killing newborns and giving low income women crappy treatment in a filthy clinic - yeah he took the Hippocratic oath seriously. :slant:

The picture of the empty press box. See what happens when you don't invite Sandra Fluke to testify?

Let's see what happens on Monday. There was a lot of fury from social media yesterday that spread the word about Gosnell, and that may have prompted Anderson Cooper to cover this. Perhaps the media will learn from the outrage and send their reporters.

I have not spent any time on this, but is not this a one-sided story

there is no question of guilt, he has no defenders,
what this guy did has nothing much to do with Roe v Wade

Thank you for drawing attention to this. I posted another link in one of the other threads, not seeing this one first.

It's absolutely horrible that women were driven to this man because of the anti-choice protestors outside the Planned Parenthood clinic in Philly. If ever there was a good reason for Planned Parenthood, it's this trial. This is a glimpse into the past. Should pregnancy ever become forced, we'll see more of these vile clinics. The more access to safe abortionnis restricted, the more women, especially poor women, are pushed into the hands of people like Gosnell.

amen, irving :applaud:

was about to essentially post the same thing thanks!

Unfortunately these types of situations maybe happening even more as we speak because of new severve restriction in the past year or so in several states.

yay for Sandra Fluke! If men get paid insurance coverage for viagra/ciallis et al women have the right to enjoy sex without the risk of pregnency, Indy.

The article doesn't mention from which race the babies are from, nor the mothers' race.

I bet that if they were white and blue-eyed babies, this trial and accusations would be on the top of news coverage and worldwide attention. Casey Anthony's case is a particular example of this situation, that trial got so much media coverage just because the daughter was cute and the mother was also cute. No one would have ever put so much attention if this would have been the supposed murder of a Guatemalan girl from a Guatemalan mother, given the high number of Guatemalans that live across Florida.

Race plays an important role in whether the person is "valuable" or not in the eyes of media coverage, somehow white and blue-eyed babies get more attention than dark skinned, black, hispanic babies/mothers. We can safely assume that these babies are in this category of attention, unfortunately.

While race is absolutely a factor in news coverage, not so sure it plays much of a role in this case. It's old news, no one is defending this man, and very low drama.

While it may be old news, the media should be looking into why the Pennsylvania health department didn't investigate any complaints about how filthy the clinic was, or even investigate how one of the women died. This clinic would've closed much sooner if the health department did it's job.

You want the media to do all this or the police department?

Yup.

There is a thing called investigative journalism.

There is, and I'll trust them with the case of food poisoning at the local sushi restaurant. There are professionals properly trained to deal with cases where people's lives are at stake

It seems the lack of interest in this applies here just as it does to
the media.

The jury is now deliberating a verdict.

Honestly, what kind of discussion would you like? Rarely is there much discussion on something nobody will disagree with. We all think it's horrible

I think the problem is that conservatives are frothing at the mouth because they think this is about abortion, and they think they have found the example that will give absolution to their cause. And then on top of that, they love to play victim, so this is a win win for them.

Problem is: this is not about abortion, and you all are not victims.

Holy fucking shit you are an asshole. THIS WAS A NATIONAL NEWS STORY ABOUT MY CITY TWO YEARS AGO. If you want it to happen now it's your fault for waiting until now.

A story two years ago?

Well the discovery at trial is happening now. Will the same standard of journalism, for example, be applied to the Trayvon Martin case when it goes before a jury two years after the fact? Of course not.

I actually posted something back when the story broke and I don't remember much reaction from anybody.

Everyone knows why the media had to be shamed into coverage just as everyone knows that if this monster had used a gun instead of chemicals and scissors to kill all these children this trial would have been front page news from day one. And Obama would be flying around campaigning for this law and that law... "If we can save just one child... we have to do this."

Instead of lashing out at Ironhorse for pointing out the obvious bias in journalism why don't you, as a graduate, go out and improve what has become a sad, pathetic profession. Please!! The country sorely need an honest press that will strive to search for the truth.

So 'the press' all got together and decided not to cover this. Some great big secret meeting between CNN, Fox News, MSNBC...

What truth should they be striving for in this case? Or was that just a phrase that you drooled out your mouth because it sounded good?
