Zoo Station drone loop

Does anybody know what effects Edge used to get the drone note that plays all the way through Zoo Station? I think shimmer was used at some point.
I read that Danny Lanois made a loop of Edge playing some atmospheric guitar and looped it and used it in Zoo Station.....

The live version has a drone loop that to me sounds like a distorted A note from Edge's guitar. If you listen to the soundcheck live performance of Acrobat, at the end it starts to get more atmospheric and clearly turns into the drone from Zoo Station, so I figured maybe he turned on a looper that captured part of what he was playing in A and that was the drone.

in the VErtigo tour version. It's true that he uses DM4 for the Intro? If that is right. What?

I was able to create a very similar effect with a keyboard. It is indeed just a droning A (in the live versions, half a step down - G#).
