The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

uh, you'll need a lot of guitars... and it's not only the guitars, mostly the effects...
for The Fly during Zoo era he used an Eric CLapton stratocaster, during vertigo I think it was a line 6 variax
EBTTRT was on the rickenbacker, same with mysterious ways
WOWY you need an ebow for,.. or infinite guitar

yeah its nearly impossible to sound exactly like the edge, unless you have the $$$ for the effects

Edge used a tele?

I'm not sure. I just know when it comes to the tone of the guitar (and not just of the amp it's played though, but the actual guitar), tele's are extremely versatile. At least mine is. I've also owned a Les Paul, an SG and an Epiphone Casino. I suppose a strat would be good for some of Edge's stuff, but it's hard to get the balls out of a strat.

he uses a tele live on vertigo, sbs, walk on :hmm: and I'm prolly forgetting a few..

for the most standard I'd say a Strat would be fine :)

A Stratocaster or a Les Paul will get you the most mileage.

With my Les Paul, I could never get an 80s U2 sound. With my Telecaster, I can get both 80s and 90s and 00s U2 sounds. I've never owned a Strat and have rarely played with one, though. I just had a bad experience with the one I did play through.

A Les Paul will you cover material with humbucker equiped guitars, like Edge's Explorer and his Les Paul Custom.

A Strat will help cover TONS of other material from all periods of U2 from "Gloria" to "I Still Haven't Found..." to "Stuck In A Moment...".

Edge has only used Tele's, in the studio - for the most part, on HTDAAB. Live, he's used them a bit more but more so from the last two tours.

But if you prefer the sound and feel of a Telecaster... that that is what will serve you best.

well, on the UF documentary on the Slane dvd you can see he uses a Strat mostly, but I don't know how much that says :hmm:

If you watch "The Making of the UF documentary", there is use of the black Stratocaster AND the 1975 Gibson Les Paul Custom (watch the studio footage of Edge cutting tracks for Pride)

As for the Slane DVD... if you are talking the 2001 show... Edge uses various guitars, as usual of shows. Strats, Tele for SBS, LP Custom, Rickenbacker... the usual 19ish guitars for 22 songs kinda thing.

As ppl have said above you’ll be able to cover most Edge sounds with a Strat and Epiphone Les Paul Custom. That said you can still get ALL the sounds with just one guitar. I have a Pacifica 112v and it’s a HSS and I can get pretty close to most sounds, including Mysterious Ways, I will Follow, SBS, Bad, Streets, EBTTRT, Vertigo, Pride, Elevation….. I use a DigiTech RP250 pedal (£99) and it has a lovely modeling setting to change the pickup sound from Humbucker -> Single Coil and SC -> HB.
I’ve seen Edge play Until the End of the World with a LP Gold Top (which is a Single Coil) and a LP Custom, which is Humbucker and they both sound stunning.

I think ppl get too hung up on trying to sound like The Edge by using effects and guitars like Edge’s. Some ppl put too much money and effort into getting the sound when that effort would be better channeled into playing like The Edge. I’m sure Edge would still sound like Edge no matter what song and guitar combo he used, such is his genius.

OK if you’re playing in a tribute band then you can start to worry about getting a ’79 Strat, Clapton Strat, Les Paul Custom x 2, each one with different pickups, Les Paul Gold Top, Rickenbacker, Gibbo Explorer.

how much is 99 pounds in dollars? i need the effects more than the guitar i realize that. I could use the DigiTech RP250 pedal

yeah i think in gonna buy me a either a strat or a tele since they are much more cheaper than a les paul or a rickenbacker

£99 is about 180USD. It's a great little unit, dripping with a platora of sounds and tones.
Can I also suggest the Vox AD30VT amp, it seems to have some useful features. I've not used one but it gets great reviews. Infact I'll be getting one soon. It has a nice setting to model the Vox AC30 amp which is what Edge uses.

What do you mean by that?

It's pickups are single coil. The sound of a single coil pickup is thin. The best of both worlds is a guitar with one single coil pickup and one humbucker, so you can get the thin and the thick.

Like les pauls, they have balls and have a great edge cutting hard rock sound to them.

strats have more of a passion sound to them, much flatter, but the sound isnt flat.
