Vertigo siren?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I have no idea how Edge produces that siren sound at the beginning of Vertigo. There are one or two videos on youtube, but none with a description. Would appreciate any help!

Death By Audio Supersonic Fuzz Gun. Click the switch to oscillation mode. Hit a E chord, then roll the volume off. The osicillation continues and that makes the siren.

Here's Dallas doing this sound. Check 1:27 into the video.

Here's Mick (The Unforgettable Fire) version, using the Axe-FX. Similar concept but I do think the tone of the "Fuzz Gun" works better.

Cheers for the quick answer! One more reason to get the fuzz gun, been wanting that for months now.

Hows your new Fernandes workin' out for you? :hmm:

Fuzz Gun is pretty fun machine. I remember trying the siren for the first time, looking right, and seeing 5 people outside my apt door (door was open) listening with their jaws dropped (as if to say: what the &^%$ was that!)

I need to get the Fernandes set up. There's a bit of a buzz. I think a full set up and frets getting dressed will be perfect.

I work for Chas as his "Dallas" with Joshua Tree. This weekend I was helping work on tones and we've a show next Saturday.

So week after or so... it will be off to refinishing at Marty Bell Finishing (San Diego) and then re-assembly and setup at "Top Gear" (San Diego).

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Patience is a virtue.

I have the 'before' pictures. But I am having it refinished. Once I get that done, I will post before and after pictures.

I knew my Retro Rocket was new old stock. I was thinking it was a 2005/2006 but as it turns out, as verified by Andres at Fernandes, it is a 2003.

...a seven year old NEW Retro Rocket.

Could be that Dallas is doing that from down below. Could be that after developing the sound they've made a loop. But essentially, it is the Fuzz Gun with the oscillator switch on, as previously explained.

That's definitely live, it's not always the same. You see Edge hit the strings to break up the siren and start it off again sometimes and that varies from concert to concert. I really love the effect though, it gave the song so much OOMPH!

You see in the soundcheck video he switches the MIDI preset, but yeah he does turn on the volume knob again. I can see Dallas switching the preset from the underworld, but how would Edge play the tune with his volume knob turned off? Or am I completely missing something? :reject:

In the soundcheck, I think Dallas is bringing up the sound and checking it there. The first 'swell' of the siren you hear is when he rolls the volume off and you hear just the osciillation.

What I think is happening is that Edge is striking a chord. But I think that Dallas is using another guitar, it's volume and manipulating the Fuzz Gun from underneath the stage to get that siren.

I will see if I can make a clip later.

Edge uses the Casino, he strikes the E-chord on that and the siren starts, he switches to the Telecaster in the meantime and sometimes start striking the chords on that as well. So you're saying Dallas probably uses the volume knob from the Casino while Edge is in charge of the strokes, until Dallas cuts the siren (and hence, put the Casino for instance aside, while Vertigo gets going?)

I think I have a headache. Great if you get the video, but no rush!!! :)

Seems you have the concept. This is what it seems, to some extent, other than that "City of Blinding Lights" is the tune before "Vertigo", so it's actually a 1968 Gretsch Country Gentleman that is used before the blonde 1966 Telecaster for "Vertigo".

It does appear, from the video that I've looked at, that Dallas is involved in the "siren" sound.

Speaking of "Country Gentleman" I have a Country Classic (the name that Gretsch used for a number of years before regaining use of the Chet Atkins and Country Gentleman names) on the way. Didn't intend to buy one but found a good deal on eBay.

WOW! Edge_O, you are the man! Got a SWEET Fernandes, now a Gretsch Country Classic!:applaud::applaud: I need some gear. Of course I now have an excuse, my amp crapped out on me in the middle of playing today. It was a piece of crap anyway.

Try a ZT Lunchbox amp! $260.00

Listen to what Mick from The Unforgettable Fire (NY U2 tribute) did with his. (AMAZING!)

Oh yeah I saw that video this morning when I got up. Amazing how that sounds! Do they have them in stores for demo? I want to try one badly now that I've seen that. A trip to Guitar Center will be in need. I've been looking at a Blues Junior but that amp might have changed my mind.

Blues Jr. is a great amp. Perhaps try them both.

That is an absolutely stunning guitar!!!

YouTube - Vertigo Siren

Early in the tour it was just getting the one upward siren. And Edge did that like the video above.

You don't roll the volume up, you actually roll it down (off), the crunch disappears and you are left with the oscillation that makes the siren.

Later in the tour, when he began having the siren go up and down in pitch, like the Pasadena DVD, there is more to the sound. It isn't just the initial upware pitch of the siren. It modulates up and down (like the Pasadena DVD). That was what I was showing - What (presumeably) Dallas is changing the pitch via the knobs like my video showed, underneath the stage once the siren goes starts.

From all the video I've looked at, it doesn't seem to change pitch until Dallas goes back under the stage.

I thought the pitch changes because Edge keeps strumming in between, hence breaking the signal and starting a new siren? Your video makes perfect sense though, it's Edge strumming and the fact that it always replicates the sound 1:1 that puzzle me. When you look at the strumming behavior in some videos, it looks like Edge has the control over the siren. Then again, that video you showed where he doesn't even touch the volume knob at the end does indicate that Dallas is involved to some extent.

By the way, awesome WH-1 at the end of the video
