Key changing pedal?

Hi, I know this might seem a dum question but is there a pedal/device that can change the key of a guitar without tuning up/down?

I'm not really a fan of the capo and I'd just like to press a pedal and be able to play UTEOTW ( live version is higher key an studio in case didn't know)and be able to have guitar in eb for say, New Year's Day without the hassle of tuning up and down.

I know my name is 'budget' edge but this is a piece of equipment (hopefully) I'd gladly pay out for. I know edge used a variex in a video which changed tune?

If memory serves, you can do that in the Axe FX. But in a pedal? I don't recall there being one.

• If there was one, Edge probably would be using it.
• Tunings and key are but one of the reasons why Edge travels with so many guitars.

As you are finding, the more you dig into the tunes and tones, it's hard to do this on a budget.

LOL.

But maybe start with mastering the pre-UF material. Most of that you can do with guitar, amp some OD and Delay.

Over time you can add gear and tunes.

PS: Don't fear the capo. It's your friend.

Yeah it's very understandable why he uses 20 different guitars per show!

It's only because my backing tracks are in different keys. So can be annoying to keep changing up/down.

Maybe I just look for a 'budget' strat again? My £45 fender squire is fine for me!

As for my experience with pitch shifting units, they don't track as well as you'd think they might and can sound off. I'd just recommend a good capo and get used to it. They're pretty easy to get used to.

If you have only one guitar, tune it to e-flat. If anything is in standard 'e', put a capo on the first fret.

Alternatively, get one guitar for e-flat and one for standard 'e'.

You have to weigh your options. Yes, much of this can be done on a budget. And heaven knows, a capo will be more cost efficient than any pedal or pitch shifting unit.

As for my experience with pitch shifting units, they don't track as well as you'd think they might and can sound off. I'd just recommend a good capo and get used to it. They're pretty easy to get used to.

I agree with the above, for the most part.

The tribute Edge I worked with used the Axe Fx to pitch up a half step for Beautiful Day. There was no tracking issues.

But then again, it seems like Budget Edge is asking for a budget solution. The Axe FX is a great solution (for a number of Edge related tones) but not a budget solution.

Oh yes, the famous Axe Fx, a great piece of kit. But I simply can't justify spending £800.00 on one when I have 2 young children.
From what I've heard I'll side step any pedal for de tuning.. Other forums have stated no effect unit can really track the tones of a de tuned guitar.

I'd rather purchase a half decent guitar ( or 2!) and tune them different.
To date I've 4 guitars. 1 squire strat, 1 epiphone les Paul, 1 ESP Explorer and a semi acoustic. I should be able to pick up a decent second strat for under £100.00, plus any excuse to have another guitar! Side question, are they any 'budget' rickenbacker guitar copies? I heard a whisper a company made some once but was issued a law suit for their trouble

Tokai made a Ric clone - years ago. You might be able to find one on eBay.

I've got 5 electrics, and have 3 different tunings now. 3 are Standard E's, 1 is Drop D, and 1 is Eb. I am using all of them more now...

Why not just drop your backing tracks that are in standard tuning half a step? It's only a couple songs anyways. Problem solved.

Eta: there is no magic solution for UTEOTW. The capo is your friend

D tuning- Sunday Bloody Sunday/ pride

Unforgettable fire- god knows what tuning this is but it's a damn fine song.

So depending on which pick ups are used by which song is played, I'm guessing someone would need a good 6-7 guitar to do a live gig, without the hassle of tuning up and down all night long!

Not sure what the deal is with Pride and SBS back in the day they were just dropped to Eb. I'm sure U2 has dropped them even further since but who cares. Noone in their right musical
mind picks a newer version of those two songs over an 80s anyways lol

Other than that most everything was done live in Eb back then and then of course you have the 90s-00s stuff some of which is written in E some of which is Eb. City of Blinding Lights springs to mind.

And then of course in recent tours Streets has gone back up to E, as has One, etc. the point is you can play almost all U2 songs in Eb and for the one or two oddballs like uteotw use a capo

There are tribute Edge's that can and have done shows with 2-4 guitars - one of those being an acoustic.

I've seen some use Epiphone Casino's in lieu of a Rickenbacker. I've seen some use a Telecaster when they didn't have a Rickenbacker.

On a budget (see what I did there?) you could do a show with a Strat (for Strat/Tele bits) and a Les Paul (for LP and Explorer bits). One could use a Casino for the Rick and Gretsch tunes.

Keep in mind, what you see on tour isn't all there is to the recordings. In the studio, there are multiple parts. And those parts can be played on as many guitars.

Live, it seems he goes for what he feels captures the essence of the tune as he makes a live part for the show.

Many are convinced a Tele was used on 'Bad' in the studio. Others are convinced it was the LP Custom. (I lean toward the LP). I've heard convincing clips for both arguments. Yet live, I've only seen him use a Strat.

Edge refers to the auctioned 1975 LP Custom as the NYD LP. He had the guitar by War session (even though I didn't see it on tour until the UF tour), so that is possible. Yet, during the War tour - R&H, he played NYD on Strats.

'Moment of Surrender' was played on the Gretsch Stereo Country Club for the 2009 shows and Strats for the 2010-2011 shows.

'Bullet The Blue Sky' has been almost always played on a Strat with the exception of the Popmart tour.

'One' was played on the Gibson 333TD on the Zoo tour, Gretsch Country Gent on Popmart, and LP's since.

The pointing being, even Edge doesn't use the same guitar for the same song all of the time.

If you have a Strat and LP, you can play most songs convincingly. Use your volume and tone controls. Think single coil tone or humbucker tone and make your guitar choice between the two based on that.

Concentrate on the playing - learning the songs. Work on timing and temp. Play with a metronome.

I've not heard that. Sounds like a Strat to em. But I suppose that one of the many guitar tracks could have Explorer on it.
